Title: Where Do Boogers Come From?

LynnMcG - January 13, 2006 01:39 AM (GMT)
OK, I know the gross topics are usually kept in the guy's forum, but this is really only mildly gross.

SO! I'm sitting here, with a stupid Breathright strip on my nose because I cannot breath and I'm waiting for my DH to get home with my cold medicine, and I'm wondering where boogers come from.

Yes, I could google this. But I don't feel well and that would only make my cranky.

So what do you guys think?

Where's the nose blowing smilley?!

Boogers come from your brain melting, and the bi-product oozing out of your nose.

Sometimes, it's chunky. :|

Boogers are mucus (myoo-kuss). Mucus is the thin, slippery material that is found inside your nose. Many people call mucus snot. Your nose makes nearly a cupful of snot every day. Snot is produced by the mucous membranes in the nose, which it moistens and protects.

When you inhale air through your nose, it contains lots of tiny particles, like dust, dirt, germs, and pollen. If these particles made it all the way to the lungs, the lungs could get damaged and it would be difficult to breathe. Snot works by trapping the particles and keeping them in the nose.

After these particles get stuck inside the nose, the mucus surrounds them along with some of the tiny hairs inside the nose called cilia. The mucus dries around the particles. When the particles and dried-out mucus clump together, you're left with a booger!

Boogers can be squishy and slimy or tough and crumbly. In fact, boogers are a sign that your nose is working properly.

I think that they're there purely for sensual pleasure.

Because everyone basically starts out with the same physical characteristics and some become developed or remain undeveloped, or develop along different lines, depending on the hormones the child is exposed to early on.
I've always hated the word "develop."

I've heard it's good for your immune system. I'd rather take echinacea though.

Good job Mandy, That was the nipple answer I was thinking too. I did like Debs answer as well. I don't know what I'd look like without my nipples but I am sure a little silly.

Knight4God - January 13, 2006 04:41 AM (GMT)
If I cut my nose-hairs out, will my nose stop forming boogers?

oIgo - January 13, 2006 04:42 AM (GMT)
I don't know....try it.

Thank you everyone for your thought-provoking booger responses.

Now let's share our grossest booger-eating stories!!

Just last week I saw a grown woman pick her nose and eat it!! AND we were in the food court at the mall. Her husband was getting her lunch. Couldn't she have waited just a few minutes to eat?!

:screwy:

Oh, and btw...

I find when I have a cold, when the booger changes (aka discharge from nose) another sort of "discharge" changes....

As for nipples on men being for sensual pleasure? Really? Hubby has a problem, then....
