Title: Crazy Co-worker
Redguard - January 11, 2006 04:23 PM (GMT)
A few months ago, HR refreshed the company's email policy and communicated it to everyone. They reminded us that there are dire consequences to abusing corporate email.
But still, some of the employees in my department choose to abuse the policy by sending around all sorts of crazy non work-related emails. Pictures, jokes, videos, etc.
So, there's this one co-worker (who, I'll admit, is a good friend of mine) is the main culprit. I've even spoken to her about it on one occasion... not as a reprimand, but rather as a "friend-to-friend" tap on the shoulder to ensure her safety in the company.
So a few minutes ago, she starts sending out some more jokes. One of them is titled, "This is what I call a wedding!" and it came with a bunch of attached images. So I'm going through the pictures; the first three suggest that I'm looking at a really posh Trump style wedding. Then, all of a sudden, all the bridesmaids and the bride start stripping and the pictures have actual nudity in them.
I had to do one of these  and then delete the email.
As I said, she's a good friend. She's also a single mother with three kids, and I'd hate to see her lose her job over something like this. But I feel so ridiculous with the idea of speaking to her about this because she's like 38-39 years old. I think she should know better.

Where I worked as a support tech, I often had to back up data on computers so that I could re-install Windows on them. When I backed them up, I just copied the data to a holding place on a server until I was ready to copy it back.
Well, one time I was copying data from a CAD engineer's computer up to the server. There were some huge graphics files (about 10 GB), so it took several hours to copy. When I was copying it back down the next day, I decided to peruse his graphics to see if I was wasting time with personal data. Whaddaya know! There was hardcore porn on there!
That data's on the server with my name attached! Every night they do a backup of the data to tape, so now my name's attached to this data permanently! I immediately called my supervisor and explained the situation. I am not going to lose my job 'cuz some jerk had porn on his machine!
I didn't know the guy. This was the first time I'd worked on his computer.Truth be told, had it not been backed up on tape, I would've just deleted the files and kept my mouth shut. Maybe joked about it with my co-workers. But this time there was a very real possibility that I would lose my job. In the end, he left the company about a month later. I pressed for details, but none were forthcoming. I don't know if he got canned 'cuz of that incident or not.

Red...I'd just tell her one more time about your concerns, then you've just gotta let it go...like you said, she's a big girl and knows the consequences. Maybe she's just hoping that nobody on her email list will rat her out, but you never know how the "higher-ups" are going to find out about that kinda stuff, ya know?

I'd say something to her Red. I mean, it's not like your company can't track her anyway, but as a friend mention something about how that last one was pretty risque for work email.
The official reason I lost my last job was for excessive internet use. (In private, my boss told me it was because he wasn't hiring women or parents anymore and that he'd wanted to put an end to my friendship with the VP's SIL). At the time, one of my primary job responsibilities was writing corporate and employee newsletters. So I was always surfing the net to gather research and stories I could use in my newsletters. Well, this jerk, brought piles of records into my office to indicate the sites I'd surfed - including some I'd visited during my lunch break.
I'd done nothing inappropriate. Never downloaded anything, no porn, etc. The guy just used my job against me, lied, and fired me.

I suddenly have the urge to log off the internet.... :(

Where my wife works, any personal internet use (no quantity involved) is grounds for termination. She has seen it happen. Contractors don't even get internet access. They have an 'air gap' system - they can only hit the internet via a Citrix session. Only the Citrix machine connects to the internet, protecting the local machine and network from any maliciousness.
They're pretty strict...

I was denied unemployment for this. AND we went into arbitration where my former boss COULD have let me have unemployment, and he fought me on it! Knowing I was our sole source of income at the time and that we had a small child.
