andiesmama - January 10, 2006 12:20 PM (GMT)
All you computer experts....how do I delete cookies on my computer...I know where the file folder is for it, but I can't delete the folder, & there are so many in there it'll take forever for me to delete them one by one....
I keep getting this annoying pop-up that's coming from there....
Thanks!!

What browser do you use...IE/FF/Netscape???
If you're gettin' a pop-up, I doubt it's from your cookies and deleting them probably won't make a difference...

We use IE....
Well, I looked at the web address in the popup window, and then did a search to see if it was on my computer somewhere, & the search came back showing it in cookies....
I ran my pop-up software scan thingie yesterday, to get rid of spyware, & supposedly it found everything & got rid of it....

To clear cookies in IE....
goto Tools|Internet Options|"General" tab....should be a button there to click...

Thanks....now we shall see....
Can you recommend a pop-up/spyware blocker? We've got AdAware, but evidently it didn't catch something since I was having this trouble....or will something always/usually get through no matter what you use?
Sorry about all the questions, but I'm NOT afraid to confess my ignorance on this subject!!
squatpuke - January 10, 2006 02:49 PM (GMT)
I use Adaware and Spybot...
here is spybot's address...

I like the IE toolbars. I used to use Yahoo's, but I had issues with them. Now I use Google's. And it also tells me when I've got mail!
The toolbars have pop-up blockers.
There's also
WinPatrol that alerts you whenever something wants to change anything on your system. It tracks cookies. It barks whenever something happens.

Sorry - I didn't read the OP.
Is the popup coming from IE or Windows Messenger?
GutterRat - January 10, 2006 03:09 PM (GMT)
User Firefox. Problem solved. :)

OK, we can't do much with a comment like that. What error are you getting? Details, ple-yuz.
<tech support hat off>
Gee, it's been a long time since I could say that! At least 24 hours ago when my dad was having problems installing Norton 2006.
Once a techie, always a techie. :bored:

My wife's gonna get so mad at me. I installed FireFox on her computer. Gonna get Thunderbird, too. (better than Outlook)

Yeah I hate when I get...
it just had an error....
well what kind of error, what did it say??? just because you were in outlook when the error came up doesn't mean that it wasn't word or excel, or windows, or any other program having the error.....
*grumble grumble grumble* lawyers *grumble* high faluting edumacations *grumble grumble* power button
sorry enough about work
Errors have text and more varieties then any tech wants to even think about... please provide as mush of the error as possible so that we the proud members of the FHL Geek squad can swiftly trouble shoot your issues....
Did it give a memory ref error, physical memory dump (not likely but still a flavor), can't find file type, can't find file association, CPU tired wants a rest and a mug of bourban.....
Not trying to be a jerk with the questions trying to inject levity... now if he woudl just keep still I'd stop breaking the needles...

You got it, dude! Just substitute the word "Engineers" for "Lawyers".
Then again, maybe they're worse. They always try to fix it on their own first...
A friend of mine was a mechanic. He had a sign in his garage that read:
| QUOTE (Mike Urbanovsky) |
Hourly rates:
- $20 for repair
- $40 if you watch
- $60 if you tried
|
[Edit]
Raspy - notice how all users grumble when you aske for details and they have to work so you can fix their problem? As if you could magically wave your hand and all their problems would disappear.

Publisher could not be verified. Are you sure you want to run this software? I click RUN.
Now I get 7-Zip. Unspecified Error.
The computer's fault! I don't know what the unspecified error is!

<friendly tech-support hat on>
It sounds like you downloaded a non-windows version. 7-Zip is a Unix format.
Try downloading again. Make sure you get the Windows version.

Thanks, Lena for getting us the info!

More research completed:
Lena,
It sounds like you downloaded a beta (or nightly-build) version of FireFox. This is one that must be installed the old-fashioned way. Compile it and build it on your system. If you don't want to do that, download it from
here.
I'll be in and out all day for questions/comments.
Adios,
Clay

Squat are you saying that it's a classic case of pebkac?
And Lena believe it or not getting that unspecified error can pointus in the right direction, it gives us something we can search on in a tech forum.
And Clay... yes I definately know and hate when user's are like why do you need to know my name just fix the frapping problem only they use another f-word... lawyers all the great language skills they learn and they swear worse than a drunken irish sailor that just zipped himself if you get my meaning...
