Title: I Know I've Been Away A Few Days But...

LynnMcG - January 6, 2006 10:24 PM (GMT)
I was a little surprised by the whole twisted and perverted thing.

I'm no prude, really. But I don't like it.

Most of us here are married. So joking at being twisted and perverted is ok because we know we're talking about it in the confines of our marriages. And of course, we can take it lightly. But I have two concerns: for the newcomer and the unmarried.

Do we want to make this kind of impression to a newbie?!! And secondly, do we want to influence the unmarried to be twisted and perverted?

Just my two cents, but I'd like to hear what you guys think.

Addicted2~Jesus - January 6, 2006 10:27 PM (GMT)
I agree, it's fine as a joke, but I sorta think the funs over wit so's to speak, I mean I gotta be the most perverted sob here but I wouldn't want any potential new comers to think we are one of em cultish type thins that claims Jesus was gay er some stupid thin like that. An it might show off the wrong idea of FHL, which to me is jes a fun lvin atmosphere type thingy, an while all of us know we're only foolin round er what not I'd hate to give someone the wrong idea. Cause Lord knows there are plenty of idiots out there these days sayin alot of stupid stuff.

clayman - January 6, 2006 10:31 PM (GMT)
I used that line when Bama Man asked "What did I get into?" in the Fellas forum.

I never really thought about it though, after GR put it on the scroll, until you mentioned it.

I'll be honest. I don't think much about newcomers -- I'll be there to welcome them with open arms, but I don't think about it.

That's a very good point.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Edit:
But something just hit me. What about people that are genuinely lost? If they come here to see what we are, they'll find we are just a bunch of normal folk, and we are Christians too. We're not boring and stuck-up, we don't have a bunch of rules to follow (except don't bash those who do! :) ) and we're not afraid to say what we think.

Granted, some of our conversations cross the line, but are we going to open up to a whole new group of people? Maybe we'll be able to get some folks that don't know Jesus at all. Maybe we'll be able to save a few by showing them that being a normal human being isn't hypocrisy.

Hmm. Now I'm torn. I must meditate on this.

andiesmama - January 6, 2006 10:39 PM (GMT)
To be honest, I saw it & just laughed my head off because I was applying it to those of us who are on here already....not thinking about any visitors we might have "lurking" around....

Thanks, Lynn, for bringing up this food for thought....

andiesmama - January 6, 2006 10:40 PM (GMT)
I see what you're saying in your "edit" Clay....I don't think we should stop AT ALL from all the stuff we talk about & the fun we have, how open we can be with each other....but maybe the scroll SHOULD be reconsidered....

I'm not talking about changing who were are...although some of these threads have really gone too far.

I'm just saying that I seriously think that great, big, red, scrolling headline is seriously misleading for a Christian site. I can understand using the phrase in a thread, again, because you know you're taking it lightly. But it's kind of a strange way to describe a group of believers in fellowship.

Although, we don't do a lot of talking about Jesus around here these days anyway.

GutterRat - January 6, 2006 10:56 PM (GMT)
Lynn - you have a great point. It's actually something I was thinking about. I honestly put it up intending it only to be up for a short time - as a joke. But then I liked it. Today was so busy - I really didn't have time to think about what it sayd too much. but - when I got home and logged in - it hit me....maybe it's not the right thing to put up there. I think it's VERY FUNNY - but maybe not the best first impression. So, I changed it.

I'll post more later - I gotta run and make dinner.

mercy@grace - January 6, 2006 11:03 PM (GMT)
I agree w/ you on everything but the scroll thing "(not your ordinary bunch of christians)

I actually felt convicted after witing one of my posts (the butt sex thread)

Conviction is good....when conviction ceases, it's time to worry.

I think we need a happy medium. I don't want this site to be modeled after "the other" site where you havta walk on eggshells, but I don't want this to be modeled "the marriage bed" either. type of board.

Thanks for gently reminding us.

OH AND I had a feeling someone would create a thread today about the posts (the sex ones)

GutterRat - January 6, 2006 11:08 PM (GMT)
so you do or don't like the new one?

Well... What do you mean by "ordinary bunch of Christians?" and why would it not be good to be one?

I wonder if we're trying to conform to the world by using such terms...remember, this is not our home we're not supposed to fit in.

I've lost many "friends" due to my becoming a believer...They think I'm a wierdo because I go to church, refer to scripture and pray when I sit down to eat...they have sex with anyone they meet in a club, drink till they throw up and wear see through clothes then get mad when guys treat them like sluts...and I'M the wierdo.

Ummm, I know in my heart that Jesus is always with me. He knows my heart, mind and soul. He KNOWS what I'm posting! Ok, so we're not a perfect Christian example sometimes, but I think we all know each other relatively enough that we don't take things so seriously. Frankly...I feel like I should be feeling bad for having the BIGGEST laugh ALL the day long! I agree that the twisted and perveted banner might've been a bit outta line...but I'll still admit that I'm still T&P.

The other thing...we don't ALWAYS get so out of line. You've gotta give props for that. This was like BANG, it was there!

mercy@grace - January 6, 2006 11:36 PM (GMT)
Duh, I just realized Lynne was talking about the banner and not the posts

Still stand by what I said tho.

I agree w/ Lynn in part about the origional motto. It wouldn't give the right impression to new people checkin' out FHL. But what do you want twisted & perverted people to do? Go to another site & post? Another site where they WON'T hear about Christ? Either way, I took it down. Because - IN PART - I agree with Lynn.

Now, the 2nd one? That's a different story.

Let me just be as blunt as possible here - In my opinion - Christian Forums is full of a bunch of "ordinary" christians. Christians that bicker about doctrine. Christians that think their church is right & no other church counts. Ordinary Christians don't talk about sex like we do on FHL. Ordinary Christians fear talk of sex. And - in my opinion - ordinary Christians are all talk - but NO action. I've lived my life surrounded by "ordinary" Christians - and they make me sick. That's why Christian Forums makes me sick.

FHL is full of radical Christians. We have fun! We joke and yes sometimes that joking is about sex or making fun of someone (usually - Clay :) ). Are we a twisted group? OH yeah we are. Is that bad? No. Are we perverted? Yes - especially Andiesmama :haha: . But I see nothing wrong with that. We don't carry the "twisted" or "perverted" things too far. Yeah, we let it go further than CF would - but that's because we are not CF. We ARE NOT Ordinary. Thank God for that!!!

FHL is full of people who, when called upon, jump into action.
Just today Raspy posted about problems in his marriage. Within an hour of his posting 7 people responded saying they would pray for him. One person, Clay, actually PM'd him and got his phone number so he could call him later tonight & make sure everything was OK. That blew me away!! When I heard about that I stopped what I was doing and Thanked God for Clay and asked HIm to guide that phone conversation. I Thanked God for Clay's willingness to be Radical! To call someone you have never met in person - to take a deep ineterest in a fellow Christian you only know from a few postings on a msg board on the net - THAT'S RADICAL!!! Clay didn't have to do that! But he loves Raspy as a brother in Christ. Clay is no ordinary Christian.

4Jacks has helped me a ton! There have been a few times that I have been in some tough spots with my job & marriage. I've sent him e-mails asking for prayer. He didn't just respond, "sure- I'll pray" - he responded with encouraging words - lifting me up. And he didn't just forget about me - he kept in touch with me checking on me. Why? He doesn't know me! He's never met me! I'm just some guy on the internet. It's because Jacks is not your ordinary Christian. I thank God for Jacks! As Squat would say - He's a good bro. :) As GR would say - He's a Radical Bro.

These are just a few examples - I have many more stories like these.

This group of people on FHL are not just a bunch of names - with no faces. We are a group of commited Christians - committed to following Christ - committed to helping fellow Christians even if we've never met them face to face. Above all - we are committed to NOT be ordinary. To not be people that just sit in the pews. We are committed to helping each other through this life. Even if I never get to meet Squat, Clay, Lena, Red or any of the other people on FHL in person - I know I will see them in heaven. FYI - I will be the one holding up the sign - "FHL freaks over here!"

That is why FHL - Not your ordinary bunch of Christians - fits us perfectly. I thank God for this group of people. And I know God is pleased.

Great post GR!

clayman - January 7, 2006 04:35 AM (GMT)
Today was a good day. Today I learned what FHL is all about. Today I learned that not all good, praying Christians have sticks up their butts.

I think if some self-righteous (like my first fiancee) comes in and sees what we are, they'll have a heart attack and die on the spot.

On the other hand, if some lost soul comes in here expecting to trash Christians, they'll press a little harder. They will find our love of Christ and our humanity all wrapped up in one.

The new scroll says it quite well.

I like the new scroll....I'm not ordinary, I'm unique! :D

rasplundjr - January 7, 2006 08:49 PM (GMT)
At my parents right now detoxing after the past couple days (mentally, emotionally and spiritually not chemically haven't gone that far...)

As the one that suggested the phrase "Not your ordinary bunch of Christians" let me define what it means to me and why I suggested it.

A) there is no such thing as normallacy anyone that tries to tell you different is trying to sell you something or scam you. Same goes for ordinary.

2) We are not the Christian sterotype, we are real people that care about each other. You guys and gals have helped me through a couple very tight spots. You have no idea the warm fuzzies I got when I saw that people noticed my absence because I was ill and were worried about me.

III) When I think about sterotypical Christians I get so disapointed, becuase I see the hypocrisy, the judgement, we have none of that here. We are human, flesh, imperfect, and we accept that, and we make the best out of it. When we see our brothers and sisters down, we try to pick them up, not quote verse at them and show them where how, and why they failed and how many flavors it came in. We look at each other say "damn that had to suck, how can I help you through this" or "I've been there this is what i did..."

I've learned more about being a good Christian from this site then I have in 32 years of having it forced down my throat.

We are mortal we are falable we are not perfect, and to try to be perfect is laughable. But striving to be better, that's where we are, that's what makes us out of the ordinary. We all are unique in our own right, and we celebrate that, we don't look to make everyone conform to an ideal, a mindset. I see too many Christians with a zealot personality, if you are not with me you are against me, you wore green after 4 on a tuesday you are with Satan... (only slightly exagerated), nad I've seen the Saturday night sinners and Sunday morning saints too....

Sorry got of on a tangent.. I do that...

we are all unique in our own right and we celebrate that... that's why we're not your ordinary bunch of Christians... we're willing to talk about some unsavory stuff, some "blue" stuff, some funny stuff... we're willing to joke together like a family...

To quote Clay... I love you guys.. I consider you my extended virtual family.... even the Canadians.... :tease:

getting of my soapbox now....

andiesmama - January 7, 2006 08:53 PM (GMT)
"even the Canadians" :rolf:

Sorry my response is kinda late.

I'll make it quick.

What I would like to see in this forum is a place for Christian to have fun, chat, joke around, and all that. And Yes I agree that we should have a place where everything isn't Moderated to an Extreme. In fact I think pretty much nothing should get deleted, which the exception of offensive material and anything by Squat.

I think we should keep this forum open to discuss what ever topics we want to discuss. And if Minors walk in and see a Sex Thread, so what, they see worse on MTv at 3pm.

But at the same time, I agree w/ lynn, some of these threads crossed lines for me.

Speak kind words, and you will hear kind echoes.

Let's make a strong effort to communicate our feelings (hurt or otherwise) in a Jesus-like manner.
