Title: Delivery Drivers!
Description: grrrr...vent
andiesmama - January 5, 2006 09:42 PM (GMT)
Do you THINK that delivery drivers should have a map or SOMEthing in their truck so they can find your house??
Andie's bedroom furniture was to be delivered today between 2 & 5...no problem. They called me shortly after 3 to get "more specific" directions, so I told them how to get here....they have since called me TWICE since then trying to understand where our house is. This last time, they passed up the access road to the street by our house by about a mile!! :wall:
He's accusing me of telling him the wrong street....I told him that BOTH times I had talked to him previously I gave him exactly the same directions....
Doesn't help that they don't seem to have a very good working knowledge of the English language....where I live, alot of delivery drivers are either Haitian or Mexican....
So frustrating...I finally told him this last time that if they couldn't understand my directions, they might need to stop & buy a map someplace.... :grump:

Grr, that would drive me nuts. We've had that problem with FedEx and UPS. We have directions on file with them but if there's a new guy on the route they always screw it up...and we're REALLY easy to get to, we're the only house out here!
Of course we've been on the other end too. I can't count the number of times we've been given bad directions by shippers and receivers which can be a real problem when you're carting around some 70+ feet of truck and trailer!
I hear you on the English thing. I deal with that on a regular basis but don't get me started or I'll be up on my soap box!

Ya know, after I posted it, I thought of you & A2J....I sure didn't want you to think I was bashing on you guys!!
And where we live...it's convoluted to get ANYwhere, so any local delivery drivers (which these WERE) should either be familiar with the area & streets OR have a map handy, ya know?
But the good thing is, they got here...FINALLY...and the furniture looks great!
PS...should we start another "English-as-a-second-language thread?" :wall:

are you kidding me?? They weren't even CLOSE enough to go out there & flag down...I was thinking there for awhile I'd have to drive to wherever their happy little hineys were & let them FOLLOW me back to my house.... :wall:

yeah yeah yeah...PUH-leeze! Lena is a good sis, she knows I'm not saying anything...
What I have a problem with is when delivery drivers don't understand enough of the English language to get directions right...even after calling me THREE times!! That's all I'm sayin'....and I ain't gonna say no more!!

Reckon I'm jes confused... mexican as in born in mexico, er mexican nationality? Cause he don't look like any mexican I ever saw.
Local delievery drivers are the absoulte worst wit directions an it's insane, they drive locally all the time, you'd think they'd git the hang of it. Of course I don't know the particulars of towns an what not, but you can jes bout ask me from city to city anywhere in the U.S. an I can tell you the route numbers an all. My most favorite ones when gittin directions is gittin some guy on the phone who gives you all these directions then says, no that's wrong, then gives you another set etc etc... an the all time favorite... called once for directions an not a single person in the place could give em to me... I asked the gal, how on earth do you git to work if you don't know how to git there!?
That's why I've got comps strapped in my truck a wife on the telephone an fancy expensive map software lol

I've been on both ends. Career pizza guy during my 12 years of college. There was one house I'll never forget. 3701 Perry Lane in Corpus Christi. 3703 was at the end of the street, 3705 next door, and so on, all the way up to 3763. Then, with a hidden driveway, right between 3763 and 3801 was 3701. Every time they ordered a pizza they'd give directions, and every time a noob delivered it they messed it up. Usually we'd just tell them when they ordered it that it would be discounted 'cuz it was definitely going to be late!
Language barrier: I lived in McAllen for a year. Closer to the border than A2J & Sarah. In the apartment complex I lived, there were 64 units and no vacancies. Out of all those people (at least 64, likely closer to 200), only eight spoke English, and only one (me) was not fluent in Spanish. After living there for a year, I learned a great deal of Spanish. Sadly, after nine years of non-use, I'm fairly rusty...
Also in McAllen, I met quite a few blue-eyed, blondes that spoke no English. They were Mexicans of "High Spanish" descent. High Spaniards are more Germanic looking. Also, many Mexicans are of a multi-cultural background including Native Americans.
Let's see -- I guess that's all my comments on this one.
I'm outtahere :swoosh:

Narrow minded? Be ye careful my dear......
What typically sets the two apart is the fact that your husband appears to be more so of spaniard, then "mexican", the line is becomin more an more defind these days as folks git bent at bein referred to as latino, er spaniard when they are infact mexcian, mexcians tend to have 'mixed' cultrue in bein crossbred wit the native indians back then, blond hair blue eyed spaniards tend to be of a more.... erm pure? blood line. Like Clay was sayin.
If I had to call your hubby sumthin, it wouldn't be a mexican, it'd be spaniard, but that would also be by jes lookin at em, folks do git thins bit fowled up an then wonder why there are so many 'white' ppl in Mexico city hehe, you'll find a line round the border towns of the dark haired/skinned mexicans an then further south the more fairer lookin ones, keep goin south an it'll flop back round agin.
What seems even more screwy, Sarah was tellin me that in Spain where spaniards come from, where they used to be blue eyed blond hair, their all dark skinned etc there now, but N E ways.....

hey, I'm not making generalizations here and I agree that alot of white people don't know how to speak proper English...
I'm stating a FACT that in my town we have an extremely high concentration of people of the Mexican and Haitian population. Of those people, a VERY high percentage cannot speak the English language well enough to communicate. When your job (ie: delivery driver) necessitates communication with the general public, IMO it is imperative that you can speak English enough to be able to get the job done.
I'm not ignorant....

I'm going to make a special request.
I would like to ask any of you involved in this argument to PLEASE take a deep breath, forgive each other, and let go.
I know that I can't "hear" voices when I read text on my monitor, but in this case I feel as though I can detect a lot of angry tones in what I'm reading. And they're not positive and I don't like it.
I want to re-inforce a positive, friendly and, most importantly, peaceful environment here on FHL.
I like all of you. And I don't want to see this thread heading down Hurt Feeling Blvd. without at least trying to put a stop to it.
And this won't be the last time y'all suckers see the Redguard Olive Branch.
Play nice.
andiesmama - January 10, 2006 02:46 AM (GMT)
sorry sorry sorry....I'll be the first one to extend the hand of friendship...re-reading my post, it does sound different than the "tone" I was going for...
all is good, sometimes I don't express myself in the best way online...
Thanks for the olive branch, Red!
