Barbie could get an unwelcome present for her 50th birthday: outlawed in West Virginia.

A state lawmaker proposed a bill Tuesday to ban sales of the iconic Mattel doll and others like her.

The proposal from Democratic Delegate Jeff Eldridge said such toys influence girls to place too much importance on physical beauty, at the expense of their intellectual and emotional development.

"Basically, I introduced legislation because the Barbie doll, I think, gives emphasis on if you're beautiful, you don't have to be smart," Eldridge said.

I kinda agree... buuuutttt... I don't think it should be left up to a nanny state gov't to make the call. Parents should be the ones to say yea er nay on such thins.

Yep. If parents didn't buy these dolls that demand would drop and the company would stop producing them.

I agree, but the way current gov'ts tend to work.. they act like nanny states, gotta tell me what is an isn't good for me an mine... that's why private markets work so well.. if you produce sumthin people don't want, they'd quit doin it. But so long as parents are goin to buy these thins for their kids the responsibility falls on the parents not some gov't.

I don't see my kids worried about Barbie's physical appearance. I'm more worried about her style of dress...

I have a friend whose 6 year old is starting to notice and question the "skinnyness" of barbie and all the disney princesses. Although it doesn't influence all girls the same way, some will indeed idealize the excessive thinness and shape of barbie and peers..

I agree with Louis...It is the parents' responsibility to be the parent, not the government's.

If the parents are disconnected enough from their children or blind to potential problems in todays toy culture, it is not the job of the government to step in and set the parenting rules..

Wow a LOT of movies TV shows, and pop singers, and posh Hotel Heiresses are gonna be outlawed too then huh?

Where exactly does it say Barbie isn't smart? Don't they have Doctor Nurse and Vet Barbie?

Society and popular media push that crap not a freaking toy.

Mattel has unveiled its latest doll creation, and she's totally stylin'--"Totally Stylin' Tattoo Barbie," that is.

The hip version of the 50-year-old icon recently hit store shelves and is already selling out.  So as not to appear unfairly biased toward blondes, the company has also released a brunette version called "Totally Stylin' Tattoo Nikki."

Both dolls come with a collection of tattoos that can be placed anywhere on their bodies.  They also include a tattoo gun that resembles a water pistol so kids can stamp tattoos all over themselves and on Barbie's and Nikki's clothes.  Mattel says the tattoos wash off with soap and water.

I don't know about you, but most of the barbies and other dolls in my house are naked most of the time. They are downstairs and their clothes are all lost in a toy box upstairs.

Being stripped of its clothes in the midst of play and clothes changing and lost in a toybox is different than intentionally dressing in sexy clothing revealing bits and pieces that in real life, makes men...uh..react...
