Title: Homeschool Co-ops :)
Stringaling - February 27, 2009 11:57 AM (GMT)
The one my kids attend was started just this past school year by a few of the homeschooling families at my church. We meet there every Tuesday. Most of the kidsa are from our church but we are growing and there are a couple of other families that have recently started attending and more that are interested. We run through the "normal" august through may school year. The year is divided into two semesters and the parents teach various classes. We start the day with a prayer service and then start class and have lunch in between the 2nd and 3rd class. Those who are not Orthodox obviously don't have to attend the service and can show up at class time, no problem. This semester the classes are art, music, and science. Last semester they were art, music, and P.E. We decided to start with easy stuff since it was our first attempt at doing this whole co-op thing. At the end of the year we'll have a meeting to choose classes for next year and decide who will teach. Right now the oldest child is in 3rd grade so we have a lot of young 'uns..
Sarah, can you give me the recipe for the edible compost? Since I'm doing science I think that would be a great project for the kids..
Also, how is your co-op set up?

do your kids go to some sort of co-op or the like squat?

For the edible compost we just got some coconut shavings and dyed them green to represent the grass, crushed oreo cookies to represent dirt/manure, cornflakes for dead leaves, pistachio nuts for egg shells and gummi worms to respresent earth worms. We didn't measure out quantities, just threw a bunch of each in a bowl and mixed it up.
This is the way our group is:
* Once a month we have a Report Day where kids do a presentation of their choice. It ranges from younger kids reciting a memory verse or singing twinkle twinkle little star to older kids giving a power point presentation on something they're studying.
* Once a month we have a field trip
* Once a month there is a youth night
* Once a month there is a Mom's night out
* Once a semester there is a 6 week co-op class grouped by similar grades which meets one morning a week to study a subject of their choice.
Let me know if you want more details.

I dont' think so....I'm not even sure what it is your talking about...
They get together with other homeschoolers and do group events with them sometimes, but nothing official.

Most homeschool co-ops involve classes taught by parents. THey usually meet once a week. Often the classes are subjects or in areas that might not get covered very thouroughly at home..

We're in a group, but it doesn't call itself a co-op. Yeah, some parents teach classes, and others organize field trips, but for the most part we're just a bunch of folks with a similar agenda working together.
I guess that's technically a co-op...

Yeah..technically you are co-operating together.. :)
