Title: For the Homeschoolers

Sarah - May 17, 2008 02:05 AM (GMT)
As of right now I kinda just try to fit Kat's schooling in at some point during the day. That worked when she was younger because there wasn't that much to do. Now both Louis and I feel it needs to be more structured. Can you give me a run down of how y'alls days/weeks go. Like what times you do subjects, how much, how often, etc.

rasplundjr - May 17, 2008 11:19 AM (GMT)
Yeah Misty is wondering the same thing now that we have no choice but to homeschool Zach.

Honey - May 17, 2008 11:55 AM (GMT)
I'm not as structured as I'd like to be.....but I like to have them in the books by at least 8:30am. Set maybe around 40-50 minutes for each subject, depending how long the lesson is. Take a break mid-morning, do a couple more subjects and be done by early afternoon. IF they don't complete their lessons during the time given, it is homework before they get to bed.

Is the school providing the work?

How many subjects do you do per day?

Honey - May 17, 2008 02:34 PM (GMT)
5

Plus there's the everyday "Home Ec" & Phys. Ed. I'd like to see if I can get them music books this next year. :band:

Sarah - May 17, 2008 04:41 PM (GMT)
Do you do the same 5 subjects every day or do they vary each day?

Honey - May 17, 2008 09:14 PM (GMT)
Most days I let the kids pick whichever one they want to work in. So it kinda mixes things up.

Is Kat in grade 1 this year?

Yeah, I'm trying to get 1st grade finished up before the baby gets here and then start 2nd grade in the new school year.

We're trying to get what we need to get him so he can rejoin school eventually and graduate with his friends.

They are just being slow about getting us the info.

My SIL home schools her kids and she is the fairly organised type. She's likely to have a schedule printed out. I might be wrong but I could ask her, if you'd like.

Sure, I'll take any and all ideas :)

This last year we has Co-op classes on fridays with our homeschool group. I only schooled 4 days a week and we went to co-op on friday. I try to do math and phonics daily. Science and history I do two to three days a week, depending on the unit and what we are studying--whethr it is more intense or easier...I have a couple of other programs that are set up to do once a week (home-ec and manners).
I really am not the most consistant person with this. I am getting better. Now that the majority of my "morning sickness" has faded, school is becoming more consistant and demanding.

Since I have two now that I am schooling, it takes much longer. Kindergarten is easy, but once you hit first grade and there is more required of the child, it is definately more of a challenge. Right now I am finishing up kindergarten and first grade and we will go straight into first and second grade with probably only a week or two break between. I prefer to school through the heat of the oklahoma summers and take more time off when the trees are pretty and the weather is cooler. :) Not to mention I will be having a baby in October. Definately gonna be a big break for them then..

I have one of those lesson planner noteboooks that you remember your teachers using way back in the day. I write down everything we do every day so that I have some sort of record and can see visually wht we are getting done and can go back and see if we covered something already or if it needs to be repeated. Writing it down really helps. I got my book at the local Christian book store that is practically half homeschool and teacher supplies..

Yeah! That's what I forgot. Get a planner for teachers. They're available pretty much everywhere.

I'm not to comfortable er sure what to do wit Kat then Liam, jes cause of the age difference, if they was like Sarah 'wanted' an all closer in age then it probly wouldn't be a problem, but as it is, I think it's goin to come down to havin to teach at mulitplue grade level classes each day which might cause more problems I donno. How do you keep Kat interested when teachin Liam a,b,c, etc?

I wanted Sarah to git one of em marker boards so she could kinda 'hold class' a bit more, cause right now, it seems Kat gits a week worth of spellins then practice on math etc, sorta hit an miss type thin, I'd rather she have sumthin a bit more structured, like ever week, she has spellin words on the board an monday she's gotta look up the defintions an tuesday use em in a sentence, ya know that type thin as well as do math an the like. As you might can imagine, I was a product of public school an I'm dumber then a rock when it comes to phoincs an spellins an the like, so I'd like Kat to have a good solid base there. Infact it's my opinion you cain't make heads nor tails out of any lingo witout havin a base in phonics, which is what really disappoints me bout my schoolin, I used to blow up the lil pictures of airplanes in the phonics books, never was taught any of it, jes handed a book an said work on this, no clue what any of it meant er anythin an it ticks me off that none of the teachers ever said, hey your screwin this up, what's the problem.

Honey - May 19, 2008 03:39 PM (GMT)
Guess what, A2J? Around here they've totally taken ALL phonics and grammar out of the schools! Guess what else?? Nobody cares!

So yeah, I hear ya.

Addicted2~Jesus - May 19, 2008 03:55 PM (GMT)
Now THAT is completely mind frackin bogglin! What possed someone to even consider doin that?!?! an for craps sake why in the hell does no one care bout it?!?! I mean I think it's soooo stupid, like in spanish class years back... I was thrust into it, had a workin knowledge of spoken lingo, couldn't spell er write it an they never not once ever even taught what sounds the stupid letters made... I mean.. isn't that jes frackin basic??? How can anyone expect anyone to pronounce a word witout first knowin the rules governin the damn letters?!?! Man I feel for you Lean, my goodness that is jes... brain dead!

Honey - May 19, 2008 04:53 PM (GMT)
Yep. This is why I'm homeschooling. It's just a big babysitting club over there anymore. They won't even mark an X beside wrong answers. Dumb school board. All going down the drain...there's been ALOT of serious crap going the past couple years.

I know what you mean about the different grade levels. Right now I have enforced a "go play while I'm doing lessons" rule with Isaac. Elijah and anneliese are on different levels in practically everything else, so what I am doing is teaching one topic in history and science to both of them, but expecting more work from my first grader and less from the kindergartener.. Like I will have anneliese do all the assignments that go with the lesson, ut Elijah, since he is not reading well yet, will just do the basic easier assignments. Next grade he will be expected to do more. Don't know how or what I will do when Isaac gets ready to learn, but for now with him I go over colors and shapes etc anytime or place that we see them. When he gets to kindergarten, I'm sure it will have to be a different story.

For the subjects that they cannot do together, like math or phonics, I make one play in the bedroom with Isaac till I'm done then they trade places..
