QUOTE
A 19-year-old freshman at the University of Oklahoma was elected mayor Tuesday of Muskogee, a city of 38,000 in the northeastern part of the state.
With all precincts reporting, John Tyler Hammons won with 70% of the vote over former Mayor Hershel Ray McBride, said Muskogee County Election Board Secretary Bill Bull.

I'm from Muskogee!!

Has the population really dropped to 38,000?

I saw him on TV and he seems to have his stuff together...Much better than the "older and wiser" politicians we are so used to...

Actually Muskogee is a really sucky, dying town. The economy there is terrible. Many homes that could be beautiful have fallen into disrepair because there is no one there with enough money to take care of them. Ther really aren't any good jobs, unless you're a doctor or whatever.. Then the rest of the town works retail or factory. Maybe this new guy can help bring money into the town to revitalize it.

Even when I was a teenager, I don't think I would have thought a teenager could possibly have enough collective life experience to be placed in a leadership role like this. He has enthusiasm and demonstrates intellegence, but when challenging issues arise, with competing interests, how will he respond? I don't anyone is forged into a strong leader by age 19. Many old farts are corrupt by the time they take office, so age doesn't automatically equal wisdom, but youth doesn't equal positive change either.

When I worked for the city a young guy (22 I think) won a seat on the city council and then became the youngest Mayor. He was very conservative and did great :P
