In another sign pointing to an inherited component to autism, a study released on Monday found that having a schizophrenic parent or a mother with psychiatric problems roughly doubled a child's risk of being autistic.

"Our research shows that mothers and fathers diagnosed with schizophrenia were about twice as likely to have a child diagnosed with autism," said Julie Daniels of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, who worked on the study.

"We also saw higher rates of depression and personality disorders among mothers, but not fathers," she said in a statement.

The study of families in Sweden with children born between 1977 and 2003 involved 1,227 children diagnosed with autism. They were compared with families of nearly 31,000 children who did not have autism. Sweden's detailed health registry provides a wealth of data for such studies.

I was going to add this to the thread about the vaccines but I couldn't find it.

I'm going to sound like an ass by saying this but screw it i am an ass to begin with....

But here's my question, is it that the parent was already a little loopy, or the extra stress of trying to care for and love a child that has such a different outlook on the world that communication is strained if not difficult what sends them over the bend?

Seriously.. I admit that I'm slightly off my rocker... actually sometimes I wonder if i might be on somebody else's.... but if I had to care for an autistic kid (not mildly so II think I can handle one that can still function) day in day out... I don't know if I would have the patience, my hats off tot he parents and caregivers that do this, you have the patience of saints

I have issues coping with my daughter ( I dont' think she's autistic but my SIL is thinking she may be) but I'm sure there is some blockage / or syndrome going on...

Honey My hats off to you, and all other families that have to deal with this issue.

From what I read it sounds like the parents were previously diagnosed...not the added stress of having a baby...

Thanks, Raspy.

You know, you may think you won't be able to deal with an autistic child, but it's so amazing what you will do for your own child. I've become a whole new person since Isaiah was diagnosed and then we just had to take things step by step. I had no hint of an idea what autism was ....until he was diagnosed at around age 5. You, at least have an idea what you may be having to deal with. Some of us don't get a warning. Even if your daughter should become autistic or have any other form of challenge...you CAN deal with it. Patience will come to you. Believe me, I'd never been much of a patient person until I had kids! If anything, your little girl will keep you in line. :D
