Keneke - April 15, 2008 03:36 AM (GMT)
But is there an age limit when BF should stop? How old is too old? Simple answers please...just curious after being sent some odd info... I'll expand later.

BF = Boyfriend? Breastfeed? Stop what? Debating?
I'm not understanding what you're trying to ask. Maybe it's too early in the morning for me yet....:snooze:

Who are we to judge when to old is for someone else? No, I don't think it's ever a matter of to old, jes a matter of us not keepin our noses where they belong. Could the case be made that it is to old at some point? Probly, I'm jes not goin to be the one to make that case hehe

Oh for cryin out loud people! She's talkin bout Breast Feedin.. my goodness, this is a BF thread IN mommy an daddy sub forum... this isn't rocket science! Now, wait for golfinmaw to come in here an say it's really boy freinds ROFLOL
Sarah - April 15, 2008 01:44 PM (GMT)
I don't think there's an arbitrary age limit. It's a personal decision between the family involved. The health benefits don't stop at a certain age for mom or child. Age 3 or 4 would probably be the top of my comfort zone but who knows - I never thought I would nurse a 2 year old but I did.
sf49erfan - April 15, 2008 01:53 PM (GMT)
Here's a article about breastfeeding older children (8-year-olds and even a couple of 10-year-olds).

Oooooohhhhhhhh!!!!!! NOW I got it. Yep, I wasn't awake yet. :cheeky:
I'd say breastfeed til 5 years of age. B)
I thought she meant at what age should a boyfriend (aka "BF") should stop debating. I wish people would use real words every once in a while. :P

Sorry A2J...Thanks for letting everyone else know that BF meant breastfeeding. I thought people could figure it out... :P

Wifey is now only dealing out nighttime yum....nothing in the morning...
Our youngest will be three on 5/5/8 and the goal is yum-free by then...
As for me, this has been a point of contention with the wife and I...I think at a minimum 1 year...but probably stopping somewhere between 1 and 2 years....
It's interesting...our 3 year old is really concerned about not getting it...almost like a crack-addict...hehe.
So IMHO...prolonging BF either:
a ) causes addiction (since they rely on it so much)
b ) builds character (due to later weaning process)

Some stuff Misty received talked about doing it until 7 or even 10 years of age....
Nope I'm not gonna let my kid go to school still on the boob.....
We're prolly gonna go until she starts eating solids (Yearish range) then start weaning Sera... maybe pump a little to help her get by and slowly wean her off...
But it's whatever Misty feels comfy with.....
she's concerned about Sera getting teeth and trying ot chew....

This is exactly WHY I didn't lay down the "strong arm of the hubby law" and demand our kids NOT be breastfed UP TO 3...
Althought I had a say in the matter, her say was bigger than my say...so I just bit my lip and let it go...
If we had gone (or have to go) beyond 3 years though (which is what wifey said), I'm sure we'd have bigger issues...

So you'd have a problem with 8 year old nursing?

I think that is way beyond the point that it was intended for. Once a child has teeth (and especially adult teeth) they can chew food. At that point they can get all of the nutrients from meats, fruits, vegetables, etc.
Also, at a certain point it could start to factor into the child's sexual (intellictual) development. If the child is male and they are learning that certain parts of the female anatomy is off limits to them, but yet they are still touching their mother's breasts everyday that could really confuse them (and probably cause trouble for the child in sexual situations later in life).

Breastfeeding is not purely about nutrition though. God built so many amazing health benefits into breastfeeding - not just for the child but the mother also. I don't think that this is by coincidence but by God's design. The health benefits are greater for both mom and child if they nurse for 2 years instead of one for example.

rasplundjr - April 16, 2008 10:15 AM (GMT)
Personally I think School age is too much.... I think the kid is just to un wieldly... unless your pumping them a glass of momma's milk to go with breakfast... Then I can see and understand but I think straight from the tab at schoolage could get.... disasterous if things went off course..... and if they happen to mention it to classmates I can se some teasing that might be harmful....
I can understand up to 2 or 3 but not much beyond that...
The child just becomes to unwieldly to be able to do it a privately, or comfrotably... but then again I don't have the equipment to try ( wellt eh internal workings) I might be off base......
Stringaling - April 17, 2008 02:50 PM (GMT)
I know that three was the approximate age back in the biblical times. Also nursing for 2 or three years provided a natural spacing for children, since nursing inhibit ovulation...
8 years is way too long and IMO just disgusiting!
"Mom, can I climb under your shirt for a while?"
"Sure sweetie"
:vomit:
In our society, we associate breasts more with sex than with child rearing and that is probably why to BF for very long is seen as "icky". In other cultures, where breasts aren't so sexualized BFing naturally goes on longer..
