When boys hit the age 18, do they still get drafted into the US army?
No, they don't get drafted into the military but they have to register for the selective service which is basically giving your info over so in the event of a draft the government knows who they can call on. It's not limited to US citizens either. It's also required of permanent residents.

And it lasts until 35 or 40. If they did reinstitute the draft all males 18-40ish could be called up immediately.
Ok, thanks for the info. Hubby was curious.

| A lottery based on birthdays determines the order in which registered men are called up by Selective Service. The first to be called, in a sequence determined by the lottery, will be men whose 20th birthday falls during that year, followed, if needed, by those aged 21, 22, 23, 24 and 25. 18-year-olds and those turning 19 would probably not be drafted. |
