Title: Home repairs

Stringaling - April 10, 2008 07:21 PM (GMT)
We're really need to get some serious repairs done to our house. Problem is that costs money. We can't do it ourselves--not a handyman in this house--and we don't know how to find someone honest enough to to a good job and not overcharge. We are discussing getting a loan to cover the expenses. I am hoping to get a small loan, fix one or two things, pay it off and start all over with another small loan so we do't get in over our heads. I have found that FHA offers home improvement loans and will be looking into that. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how i can find a decent contractor or whomever to work on my house?

Do you know anyone who has had any work done on their house? Maybe someone at church? You can then ask them what their experience was with their contractor and see if they'd recommend them.

Have you tried asking at Home Depot or Lowes?

I hate to sound like a racist prick.....

And this would prolly rile A2J......

You could go look for some mexicans hanging out in front of home Depot.......

I think both home depot and Lowes have contractors that will do minor repairs too.....

Isn't there some TV show that you can call and they fix up your house for free...

I'd also like to get some sort of drainage thing for the crawl space. We tend to collect water.. :yikes:

Floors are easy (depending on the material).
Window's are easy too. My FIL figured it out and I'm sure Basil could too if he really HAD to :P

He is afraid that he'll get into it and get it all opened up and realize that he can't do what it takes to fix it and then we'd have a bigger problem..Which I totally understand. If you're not confident you can do it, make sure to get someone who can for sure..

Gotcha. I guess we just go for it :P Haven't had a problem yet :D
Make sure you get your permits :D My friend had her window's removed ready for the new ones to install and I guess a neighbor drove by and noticed and contacted the city. They didn't have permits and had to wait till their permits cleared. Not sure if it's as strict in OK.

Ya know, it's not race that has anythin to do wit it really, there are worthless white people, worthless black people.. an yeah ok, probly more worthless mexicans. I have known some illeagls that are actually damn hard workers an do a bang up job, I've also known the scum.

Raspy's idea isn't bad, dependin on how involved the work is, wether you can communicate an tell em exactly what you want do, it'll be hit an miss wit who is good an who isn't etc but it's not a bad idea either.

We've had a miserable time tryin to find someone to do work round our place, the work we have had done in the past is jes a wreck, I have found a guy that is oh so interested in doin an addon but cain't ever git ahold of the jerk. Like Sarah said, an golfinmaw said, word of mouth is far better then anythin else.
