Title: Nursing......

rasplundjr - February 20, 2008 04:11 PM (GMT)
This is an awkward question... And might seem slightly inappropriate, but I ask that you read the entire question through before being offended.

This one is aimed more at the Moms since the dad's lack this ability.... but some of hte Dad's out there might know the answers too...

Misty is Nursing, and she was told to avoid spicy foods and caffeine and alcohol because it could affect the baby.

For those that have nursed or known those that have, what foods need to be cut out completely (I know booze), and what foods need to be scaled back, and maybe what foods should we introduce into Misty's diet?

I'm guessing strong foods like onions and garlic need to be scaled back a lot as it can imprint on the taste

But I'm also guessing if she pumps when she can and stores up a couple days worth then then consumes a tasty dish like that she can use the stored Milk for a couple days until the extra spices get out of her system....

It all depends on your baby. I never cut out anything like spices because my kids never reacted to them. I wouldn't cut things out unless baby showed signs of reaction and then start eliminating things. I even (gasp) had a glass of wine when Liam was 6 weeks old and never pumped and dumped.

Is Sera having some gas problems and that's why you're wanting to eliminate stuff?

RooMama - February 20, 2008 05:59 PM (GMT)
If Sera is really reacting to something, the first thing to eliminate would be dairy, actually. Dairy is usually the biggest trigger of reflux. You might notice that certain foods make her a little gassier than others, but if she's not in pain from it, I wouldn't worry.

Oh and I've heard that the the best time to drink achohol is during a feeding, then it has the longest time to get out of mom's system before feeding again. :dunno:

Well Misty was told to avoid spices and onions because it could effect the taste and Sera might fuss and not take the nursing.

Sera is a little fart machine she never seems to have an issue with pent up gas, Misty just wants to make sure that Sera doesn't all the sudden stop taking the nursing or fusses because of taste if it's something she can control...

For Brit and Z she only nursed for a short period of time with each so she really doesnt' recall too much from then....

I never changed my diet just because I was nursing. In fact, when I felt my milk supply going low, I'd take a SIP of white rum to "refill". Worked like a charm every time AND had a nice nap with the baby! Wine and beer also did the trick. Kinda cleanses the milk somehow...

Addicted2~Jesus - February 20, 2008 09:28 PM (GMT)
Shoot... when I brought Sarah an Kat home from the hospital I broke out my great great g'ma's brew for Sarah, turn er into a Jersey milk cow. A slightly warm beer and a choclate bar... works ever time.

I wouldn't change the diet at all, elimenate the booze of course, but the simple fact is, whatever Misty had been eatin at the time er milk came in is the taste your babe got anyways. Let's jes git personal an honest here, have a taste. If it's sweet you hadn't a thin to worry bout, if it's a bit bitter er sumthin then maybe change the diet up a bit. Any drastic change in Misty's diet might change the taste but it's not THAT big a deal, I'd be willin to bet your babe isn't goin to jes decide to quit eatin UNLESS ya'll have been supplmentin er wit formula er sumthin an she jes goes for that an not the breast.

Personnaly, I think it might be more of a mole hill then a mountain, that's my own personal opinion of course, each parent must decide for themsef's, but I wouldn't worry bout makin Misty eat a bunch of bland foods, er even non-spicy ones, UNLESS your babe has some reaction to it, like what's been mentioned, gas, er spit up etc etc

I would have nursed if I could have, I just wasn't able to..

Sorry Raspy, I can't give you any advice.

As much as Misty complains about it sometimes I'm wondering if it's really worth it...

I was a formula baby... I'm very bright... too bright for my own good sometimes....

Most of the kids in my family were formula babies.....

Misty wants to do the breast feeding thing then complains at 3 in the AM when she has to feed Sera and she hasn't pumped and stored any yet for me to step in and help out with a feeding so.......

But meh....

Some study somehwere said that she should keep it up until 5-7 YEARS old... I find that a little excessive....

I say until she needs to transition to real food at the longest.....

Wow, Sarah, that's great. I'd never heard about pre-term milk before, but I sure noticed it with Phillip. The milk I pumped for him was sooo much richer than what I would pump for Tessa.

Locking this for a minute so I can split out the BF vs FF posts into a new thread.

Okay, it's all cleaned up. I think I deleted one quote from one post (String) that referenced the FF/BF stuff, but it didn't take anything away from what you were saying to Raspy, String. Okay? :)
