Title: Is Attention Deficit Disorder Real?

Sarah - February 10, 2008 01:54 AM (GMT)
I've always been of the mind that if ADD was real it was way over diagnosed and basically a "catch all" for bad behavior, lack of discipline etc. But after yet another argument last night with Louis over the things about me he just wants to throttle me over (I didn't do something he asked me to do) I remembered a bit of a show today that I saw with a man who basically had the same "symptoms" as me (forgetfulness, disorganization, overwhelmed with the most basic tasks) and he had said he was diagnosed with Adult ADD. So out of curiosity I took an online Adult ADD test and was floored by the results. It said that if you get a score of 20 items or above it indicates a strong tendancy toward ADD. I got a score of 37! THIRTY-SEVEN!!! It said I was likely to have 4 of the 5 ADD sub-categories. So I went looking for some more info and I came across this article described Adult ADD:

QUOTE
What Does Adult Attention Deficit Disorder Feel Like?
Susan, an administrative assistant and mother, feels overwhelmed with her responsibilities at work and home. At work, she finds it nearly impossible to focus her thoughts. Her desk is a mess; her papers and projects lie about in total disorganization. She constantly fidgets and taps her foot when she is sitting at her desk. Often, she misses deadlines because she finds it difficult to complete her assignments. She is constantly losing important pieces of information and she has been reprimanded by her boss about her performance. At home, Susan has trouble keeping up with the needs of her husband and children. She finds it difficult to remember the dates and times of her children’s activities. She forgets to complete simple tasks like paying the electric bill or picking up the laundry. She is constantly losing her keys and her purse. Her family feels that she never listens to them because she often appears so unfocused. Her behavior has caused her family to feel distant from her.

It describes me to a frackin' T except I don't work outside the home. All I know is I try hard with these problems but constantly fail miserably.

So do you think ADD exists? I'm not really sure what to do with the info I found out.

Do you have a link for that?

According to what you posted, I too, would have ADD.... So yes, it does exists. Like with everything else, there are stages to it...mild, moderate, severe, profound...depending on the person.

PERSONALLY, I think folks are just finding "labels" for just about anything out there when it ALL comes down to basically being stressed out.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. There are so many labels for everything and people use that as crutch as to why they can't act properly etc. It is frustrating though because the things that agrrevate Louis though I DO work hard on to change but I always seem to end up back to square one.

The link to the test is http://www.oneaddplace.com/add-test.php
