Title: How the heck does the American voting system work?

hope4today - February 6, 2008 01:22 AM (GMT)
I do not understand the American voting system for the President at all.....What's with the presidential campaign and the voting in the different states? I keep hearing stuff like...this person won here..and this person won there..etc

You still have one day where the whole country votes for the President don't you? So how does this state stuff fit in?

Can anyone explain it to me?

Probably not but I'll try. B)

In order to narrow it down to the 2 people running for President (1 Democrat & 1 Republican), we have what we're doing now, the primaries.

I'm a registered Republican, so I got to vote in the Florida primary for one of the guys who was running for the Republican nomination. Which was Romney, oh well.........

Then it's like they keep a running tally, and after all the states have had their primaries, whichever candidate came out on top for both parties runs in the Presidential election in November.

That's it in a nutshell.......please don't make me get into stuff like delegates, the electoral college, blah blah blah :faint:

Reading my journal entry from yesterday might help (or then again maybe not).

Deb....

Since your a Floridian can you explain how's it's done there...seems a little different than the other states...

If I recall, you continue to count, recount, then device systems and levels of tainted, missing or partially punched ballets then recount again and sometimes even a fourth count...then when all else fails and your democra...er desired politician doesn't get elected, you simply cry foul and call the election tainted....

Poorly.....

Basically the states get to vote in their various primaries which are scattered over several months... then comes the democratic and republican national conventions and they decide who get's the nod to run for president from those that decided to remain in through the course of the primaries.

Then the presidential candiates battle it out, and the American public votes in November, however the electoral votes are the only votes that mean a damned thing so even though a states popular vote goes one way their electoral vote could go another because the American people are evidently too stupid to pick our own leader we have to have a member of the electoral college (who makes up their own mind and doesn't have to go along with popular vote) do it for us.....

:smack:

If it weren't for all the old retired people who live here AND those that don't speak our language THEN they would know how to punch a ballot the right way.

That said, we've now switched over (finally) to touch-screen. :thanks:

Thanks for your replies, everyone. I thought I had it, then a couple of curve balls came my way so I have more questions but I don't have time to formulate them now so
