Title: An & And

Addicted2~Jesus - January 23, 2008 05:29 PM (GMT)
I say that an , and are interchangeble. Sarah doesn't think so. But you can use either word when talkin bout this right? Does anyone know how to define the difference?

Honey - January 23, 2008 05:41 PM (GMT)
 You really should take an English course. Your wife can be your teacher. :P

And = add on. If you didn't know that then you've got serious problems. :cheeky:

An = an apple. Not A apple.

Vast differences.

Addicted2~Jesus - January 23, 2008 05:43 PM (GMT)
Huh?

You threw apples an oranges. you threw apples and oranges..................................

That is correct! Good for you! Would you like a sticker?

andiesmama - January 23, 2008 06:24 PM (GMT)
NOT interchangeable!

From dictionary.com:

an -- the form of a before an initial vowel sound (AN apple; AN elephant)

and -- as well as; in addition to; besides; also; moreover (apples AND oranges; Louis AND Sarah)

Here you go: Louis AND Sarah ate AN apple.

Clear as mud??? B)

rasplundjr - January 23, 2008 06:36 PM (GMT)
grammatically no they are not....

phoenetically considering some dialetcs yes, and considering A2J types like I reckon he speaks or close to it, for him it makes sense.....

I've got kin that say an instead of and... no big....

Yah erm.. I disagree hehe

Louis an Sarah ate an apple

er

Louis an Sarah threw some apples an oranges...

I really don't see why they aren't interchangeble.

Maybe it's like Raspy says, they are different in gramatical stuff er sumthin but the way they sound er what not makes em interchangeble...

andiesmama - January 23, 2008 07:44 PM (GMT)
:agree:

It totally depends on how you say it~you pronounce them the same (and write them the same), others of us don't. B)

Written gramatically, tho, it's different.

Yep! But in A2J's old age and pretty much set in his ways....he likely ain't gonna change his grammar.

rasplundjr - January 24, 2008 05:33 PM (GMT)
well when he's DWT you can't expect perfect grammar.....

Honey - January 24, 2008 05:37 PM (GMT)
I can expect it....it just isn't going to happen. :P

rasplundjr - January 24, 2008 06:41 PM (GMT)
How does that saying go.... To diminish disapointment lower expectations

Addicted2~Jesus - January 24, 2008 08:03 PM (GMT)
Ya'll jes bout got me lost here.... I practiced earlier today sayin AN & AND, an they sound the same! An I was listenin when I was talkin to Sarah earlier an I don't here no difference in what she's sayin either.

Personnaly, I did think they we words that could replace each other, I still don't git it at all that they don't an are sposed to mean sumthin else but... oh well. I spose I'll..... bow to Sarah this one time an let er be right... of sorts.. I still think she's wrong an so are ya'll but hey.. whatever right? hehe

Or A2J-Lan if you will... or would it be if'n you will

seige - February 1, 2008 11:01 PM (GMT)
and- a conjunction connecting two participal phrases

an- an indefinite article (in the adjective family) along with "a" related to the article "the" which is a definite article.

What A2J's getting caught up on is the phonemes (sounds) the two words make.

In A2J land /and/ and /an/ sound the same but the fact is so does

/hail/ and /hell/,

/whale/ and /well/, and

/tale/ and /tail/

*On an unrelated note, sorry I haven't been around in a while. Been busy, but I've missed you!

:gotcha:

To those of you who were checking how you say /tail/ and /tale/!!!!

"They sound the same? Do I sound as uneducated as a Texan?!"

"Tail" and "tale" are homophones and they sound the same.

heh, heh, heh :hmm:

Honey - February 2, 2008 02:32 AM (GMT)
Yeah, my grade 4 kiddo just started learning about homophones and all that fun stuff too....interesting.

This got me to thinkin... some of you might not know an some might, on CF you can chat wit chrisbot, good way to git some post counts etc, well do you know that I had some gal come in there a few years ago an totally blast me for not speakin correctly to chrisbot an bein rude an all sorts of stuff?? It was insane, I of course blasted er right back an the poor auto-responder of chrisbot didn't know what they heck was goin on. I couldn't believe the nerve of someone like that, actually comin into a private conversation like that an then blastin me. Reason I got to thinkin bout this was cause I'm still usin an an and interchangibly. Was wonderin how many folks I irk because of it. I certainly am not tryin to do it on purpose, I hope folks can take em thins wit a grain of salt as it were.

rasplundjr - February 8, 2008 07:18 PM (GMT)
irk?... not me... confuse... occasionally.....

Sometimes it takes me two or three reads to translate A2J into English.... (or even Raspy English cuz know I have to confuse people on occasion with my turns of phrases) but then again because of dyslexia sometimes I have to read many posts 2 or three times to get the gist....

Meh express yourself how you want We'll figure it out eventually, and if we can't we can ask you to rephrase it or we can talk to Sarah the resident expert at translating A2J Speak.... or type for that matter.....
