Dude,my wife has a weight problem,too.
She seriously wants to have an operation called a "band" something.
It's just so expensive.
I think insurance should cover life-threatening obesity,but it doesn't.
What's up with that?!

rasplundjr - December 17, 2005 02:57 PM (GMT)
Actually my insurance covers all but my deductible.

Problem is before the doc will put me on the table I have to have a psych eval that I can't afford, and go to a cardiologist that I can't afford, and get back on my meds that I can't afford...

GAstric banding.. very good surgery, sadly it would be as effective in my case as the full roux en y procedure and because of hte way I'm built I can't go lapro I have to go open.... so I get a really cool scar I get to lie about..

"Oh this... back when I was in nam I got ambushed by........"

I'm not old enough for Nam but if I'm gonna lie about the scar I'm going big.....

"Heh this sonny I got this two hours before General lee surrendered at appotomax...."

Knight4God - December 17, 2005 04:01 PM (GMT)
What kind of insurance do you have?
My wife lost all her excess weight on the Quick weight loss program but then she gained it all back.
She just can't eat normal food without balloning.
It's in her genes.
I,on the other hand, eat whatever I want without gaining weight.
I am overweight, but it doesn't get out of hand.I'm maintaining at around 190.
I wish she could get that surgery.

There are some things I see here, and I hope you guys don't mind me being frank. I'm not trying to be mean or hurtful, but am writing these things because I think there is a better way, which is not the easier way.

I've known people to get some of the different surgeries to lose weight. At first, everything seems fine, the weight is going down. Some years later end up being malnutritioned, getting other diseases, and frankly, looking quite terrible. Sure, there are probably success stories of people who have had success, but if you followed them through the years, I bet you their lives would've been far better off had they not taken a short cut.

People often think these surgeries will help them, and maybe temporarily it does. However, none of them actually address the root cause of the problem and work to eliminate those issues. The surgeries may help you drop the weight, but it's unnatural and it's hard for your body to adapt that quickly to what it took years to develop.

Rich -- just from the posts I've read of yours, your problems aren't with your weight per se, or even genetics. It's really with making the wrong choices for your mind, body and health. You write you get 2.5 hrs of sleep. Do a Google on sleep deprivation and weight gain. You'll see a HUGE correlation. You don't need surgery, you need to get adequate sleep EVERY NIGHT for your body.

What's your diet like? Is it comprised of whole, natural foods in as much of their natural states as possible? Do you drink things like milk, juices, sodas, alcohol? I'd give those things up because they are all empty calories. I suppose drinking juices that you make from fresh, organic vegatables and a little fruit would not hurt, but I would not buy any commercial juices of any type. Adults do not need to live off of dairy, for the most part. Sodas are just plain bad. Yeah, there are some studies that show red wines in moderation and a little every day is good for your heart, but since weight reduction is something you need to do, alcohol has a lot of calories (1 gram = 7 calories).

Because you weigh a lot, I would suggest just doing simple walking for as long as possible (you can break this up into several times a day). I would get a heartrate monitor. I just recently took a New Leaf VO2 Test that told me what my anaerobic threshold heart rate is. This is a really good thing to have, so you know how hard you need to work to have your body most effectively burn fat, which is what you want to do.

I'd start keeping a food journal. Why don't you post that here.

1. What you eat
2. How much you eat of it
3. When you eat

In order to lose weight, you'll need a caloric deficit, but something that is manageabe, doable and sustainable over a long period of time. Let's say you lose at an average 2 lbs a week and mainly bodyfat. Go to this and take the test to determine what your metabolic typing is: http://www.mercola.com/forms/mt_test.htm

Once you know that, give me the results. I'll help you figure out some simple, affordable, healthy ways to eat.

If you lose 2 lbs a week, in a year that is 104 lbs. In 2 yrs 208 lbs. In 3 yrs. 312 lbs. That will put you around 188 lbs...so, you may reach your goal in less than 3 yrs. If it should take you 5 yrs, so what? Have you read about my journey so far? I've learned a ton of stuff and I continue to learn. My health, when I'm 40, should be excellent as well as my physique, fitness, stamina, vitality, energy, mental outlook, and the list goes on.

When you take shortcuts like these types of surgeries for weight reduction, you'll eventually reap the negative attributes of those things. I don't know you, but I do care. Take the time to learn about your health. I've done a lot of reading and experimentation on my own body, as well as my kids. They are reaping the good things I am learning.

When you drop a hundred pounds or so, it will make mobility better, then you can do some other exercises. For now, at the weight you are at, it's a huge strain and a lot of stress on your joints. If you can find a pool, pool exercises would be good, too.

I have plenty of places and articles, books to direct your learning.

You also have the mental/emotional aspect of your life that I feel is very disempowering & negative. You intellectually seem to know a lot of things, but emotionally I think you are discouraged and could use some help. I was able to employ a method called EFT (emotional freedom technique) to help break many negative emotional issues/addictions I had. You can find out more about this at www.emofree.com (Note: the guy that developed this is into the New Age movement, however, the technique itself is very useful. You can disregard anything that doesn't sound biblically correct to you from that site).

If you need help with the EFT stuff on where to get started, PM or email me. I can help you out here as I've been using this with great success since May'01.

Perhaps I can share my learnings with you to help cut your time down, so that you don't have to go through all the school of hard knocks that I've had to.

I know you can make these changes in your life. It's one thing at a time. If you address the mental/emotional things first, it will make everything significantly less challenging.

God bless,
Doris

I bet when your wife lost all her weight originally, she did not address the root cause of why she had the weight gain in the first place. THAT is the reason why she gained the weight back.

We're all born with genetics. That we can't change, but we can learn how to work with our genetics.

What is normal food? Processed stuff, white flour products, refined sugar? Those are perhaps normal in our American society, but those are not normal foods to the body, rather they are VERY UNNATURAL to the body. Your body allows you to abuse your body more, but eventually it will not and if you continue to eat America's "normal" foods, you'll end up disease ridden in one form or another.

Ok, if I made an assumption regarding the normal foods you eat and they happen to be all natural foods, forgive me. A lot of people think all those processed foods, or fruits & veggies that are filled with pesticides & hormones are normal....but they aren't.

The other factor is the emotional/mental thing. Many people have very poor self-esteems, poor self-images, do not accept who they are, do not love who they are. Your body remembers this and these negative emotions wreak havoc on your bodies. I know. I've been there, done that.

Also, what is good for one person, does not necessarily mean it's good for another person. You pee standing up. Your wife pees sitting down. Neither is good or bad, but is unique to you as people.

Lastly, you can encourage your wife by the language you use. In your post you use the word, "normal", "genes", "can't", "wish"....all those imply some very negative, discouraging victim type mentality, rather than one that takes ownership of problems and works to resolve them in an empowering way. Change your language. Change how you view and perceive things.

Marriage is a partnership, a team. When one part of the team is weak, you work harder to help make that weak part stronger.

I know what you mean. when the budget is tight those "organic" foods are just a joke. Actually over the last few years my husband and I have gradually been able to cut back the boxed foods that we eat. A good rule of thumb is to not buy boxed meals. They are too high in sodium and hydrogenated oils that are bad for us. Once you get out of the habit of that and cook from scratch more, at least I have learned, we tend to have more leftovers (but our kids are only 3 and 4-I'm sure when they are the age of yours leftovers will be a dream of the past) I will try to get you some cheap meal ideas and recipes that are tasty and good for you.

We are Eastern Orthodox Christians and the Church prescribes vegan fasting twice a week ( and during Lent and the 40 days before Christmas--ugh!) So we have quite a few vegitarian recipes. Not buying so much meat has saved us tons of fundage! Actually, on Wednesdays and Fridays we fast from meat and dairy -Wednesday to remember the betrayal of Jesus and Friday to remember His death--we usually have beans and fried (oooh I said the "f" word!) potatoes and cormbread on some Wednesdays and with the leftovers from that we make bean burritos on Friday. Talk about some cheap meals! Less than $1 for a bag of beans and a box of cornbread and we buy bags of potatoes that are pretty inexpensive.. I'll gather up some ideas for you... i am pretty good at pinching the pennies!

I don't have the time to cook from scratch and my wife doesn't have the patience....

A couple in my church got the gastric bypass surgery. She looks great! He is dead.
The day after his surgery they got him up to walk around - they went to sit him back down in his bed - went into a coma - never came out of it.

rasplundjr - December 20, 2005 02:53 PM (GMT)
If I can not get the surgery.... score... but if I have no other option.... better a chance at a future with Misty the kids and any future grandkids (please no grandkids anytime soom please no grandkids anytime soon.......) then dead from a heartattack in my mid 30s

Dude, you can't count sex as your workout for the day. I don't mean to be rude, but the only way you are going to loose weight (aside from surgeries) is to actually work out. There is no way around it, there is no substitute. Even if you do get the surgery, you'll still have to work out in order to keep it off and live healthy.

With 300 lbs that you want to loose, you are going to have to put aside a LOT of things and DEVOTE time to working out everyday. I'm not an expert but I think everyone here will agree that at bare minimum 30 minutes of cardio everyday, is going to be a good start. That's a fast paced walk or 35rpm on the eliptical, something along those lines.

30 minutes is not a lot of time, I know it's hard to eek 30 minutes out of the day, but you need to move health up on your priorities if you wanna loose the weight.
