Albus Dumbledore, the headmaster of Hogwarts, is gay, Harry Potter author JK Rowling has revealed. ADVERTISEMENT
Rowling outed Dumbledore, a central character in the books, while speaking to an audience of fans in New York. |
LINKDoes this change your perpective? Will you kids still be allowed to read it?
Is string the only fan on here?
Keneke - October 20, 2007 09:48 PM (GMT)

I haven't read any of the books. I'm curious to see if the author revelation of the character changes how ppl view the books...
I'm curious why she waited till now and from what I've read, the character didn't reveal his homosexuality...
andiesmama - October 21, 2007 01:21 AM (GMT)
I keep meaning to start the Harry Potter series. From what I've been hearing, there's really nothing in any of the books that would indicate his "sexual preference", so I don't think it would really bother me.
Stringaling - October 21, 2007 01:44 AM (GMT)
That's odd.... I pictured him as more wise and asexual...Ca't imagine him wanting to end over for it....Something's not right... Could be a publicity stunt and money maker....
Still love the books..

Doesn't your church shun all forms of witchcraft and homosexuality...
Or is ok to read about such things as long as....
| QUOTE (stringaling) |
Only if you read murder mysteries in which you are seeing and hearing every detail of the murder through the books..Only if you read murder mysteries thatdetail the act with the intent of giving you the thrill, or adrenaline, or whatever a murderer gets from his crime..
Watching people have sex through words and reading about a detective solving a murder aren't really comparable... |
I guess as long as the witchcraft & homosexuality are not detailed with the intent of giving thrills or adrenaline or whatever then you're ok. Oh wait....

Ah...but the books are about good vs. evil... Real witchcraft is not even in the books..

ok....
1) you must READ those sex-type of books to know so much about them....hehe.
2) do you know so much about witchcraft to KNOW that it's not in the Potter books? (I'd like to hear from good ol' lynn on that one)
3) What does your priest say about Harry Potter...and if he is truly against witchcraft, would your read them anyway and commit blatant sin before THE church.
nuff said....

It makes me sad that she would build a character up as a hero for children, then after they admire him, reveal something about him, which was completely absent from the novels, from what I've heard. I already had reservations about the novels, but her claiming that Dumbledore is gay is disappointing.
I don't know if our priest has said anything about Harry Potter, but I've heard opinions on both sides, so I guess there isn't any official dogma on this topic.

Kinda what I was wondering. Aren't there all different types of "witch craft" and who's to say it's not in the books?
That said, I STILL want to read 'em. :P
rasplundjr - October 22, 2007 02:25 PM (GMT)
Kinda makes sense....
he was way to neat and tidy to be straight......
But seriously - I kinda figured he was not ont he straight and narrow, it never is implied in the books, and why it comes out now unless she's gonna delve into the young life of Albus Brian Wolfrick Howmanyothernamesthisdudefreakinghas Dumbledore makes it kinda pointless. But just because he's gay doesn't mean that he's a bad role model. Again he does not engage in any of the activities that would prove without a doubt he plays for the visiting team.

That's not actually true. Real magic, real witchcraft is incredibly easy to do. And the author does use the real stuff.
I'm surprised you heathens read this stuff. Especially you String.

No, because I never bothered looking after the first book. Remember, my background, after Catholicism, is in the occult and witchcraft. So reading and watching Harry Potter in our house is like having wine at the table with an alcoholic. You just don't mess with that junk. It's WAY too dangerous for us.

:dunno: If you've never read them, and can't give me examples of the "real" witchcraft in the book, how do you know that it is there??
andiesmama - October 22, 2007 11:15 PM (GMT)
She said after the FIRST book.......I took that to mean she read the first one & decided that it wasn't something that would be good for her or her family.....
Stringaling - October 22, 2007 11:17 PM (GMT)
Okay, then what in the first book was "real witchcraft"???

Wouldn't anything "paranormal" in a book about witches and warlocks be considered witchcraft?
Thus, any of the spoken spells, magic wands, broom flying, morphing, etc.etc.etc.....
andiesmama - October 22, 2007 11:19 PM (GMT)
I dunno....... :P

| According to the Journal of Parapsychology, the term paranormal describes "any phenomenon that in one or more respects exceeds the limits of what is deemed physically possible according to current scientific assumptions |
That would mean those things were out of the ordinary...This was common so it wasn't "paranormal"...
I really want to see the examples of real witchcraft in the books....
GutterRat - October 22, 2007 11:34 PM (GMT)
wow - kinda odd that a book about sex - pretend or real - would be "off limits" - but a book about Magic - pretend or real - is full acceptable. Hmmm....

So are you saying because you just can't physically see evil (broom flying, levitation, magic spells)...it doesn't exist?
If it looks like a turd, tastes like a turd, smells like a turd...it's probably a turd. Right?

Real sex is explicitly described--things that could and have actually happened...Magic in potter--can't and hasn't happened. Isn't the same as the witchcraft of today..The literary sex is the same... That is the difference...
Still waiting for examples of real witchcraft.

I'm not a witch...so I can't give you specific witchcraft examples...
I'm also not a Jedi, so I can't give you specific force examples...
(Raspy...can you make your XWing levitate outta that swamp for string?)
According to your definition, do you consider any witchcraft in Wizard of Oz? How about Witches of Eastwick? Bewitched?
Do you think that little kids are seeing their hero Harry conjure up some stuff, or fly on his broom...that they don't go in the backyard and pretend to do the same? That would bother me as a parent...would that bother you if your kids pretended to do Harry Potter magic, voodoo, witchcraft stuff? Or would just hand over the "eye of newt" outta the cupboard?
andiesmama - October 23, 2007 12:09 AM (GMT)
How can you say the magic in Potter hasn't & can't happen? Disclaimer: I"ve not read the books, but I've seen enough of the movies to see him waving the magic wand around, flying around on a broom, etc.
Sounds like magic to me. And who am I to say that it can't happen? Don't witches use magic wands? :dunno:
