Title: Which virus protection?

andiesmama - September 13, 2007 03:02 PM (GMT)
Okay, seeing as it looks like we're going to have to wipe out & re-install, what virus/spyware/etc do you guys recommend?

Currently, we've got Nortons, Spyware Blaster, Spybot, and AdAware.

Suggestions/recommendations?

None are great. All are better than nothing. McAfee does some stuff better than Norton. Norton does some stuff better than Trend Micro. AdAware does not check for viruses (it would not catch Nimda). Spybot does not catch viruses. Each, though is a specialist in its own department.

Problem is, you load all these specialists, the computer will be so busy running the specialists that it won't have time to do anything else (like load a Flash presentation). So, you're in a catch-22.

It all boils down to safe surfing. Turn off pop-up blockers. Don't turn them on just because the site asks you to. Make sure it's a site you trust before you turn it on. Don't go to sleazy sites like those for downloading free software or music. It's a crime anyway, and they're full of online problems. Most game sites are just as bad (which is why I have to keep fixing my mom & dad's computers).

If you wouldn't go there in person, don't go there online.

I'm running a decent, free Anti-Virus system called "ClamAV". Check it out http://w32.clamav.net/

For anti-virus we use AVG Free. Because we leave our computers on all the time it's scheduled to scan in the middle of the night. We run Spy-Bot and AdAware every so often.

I use whatever I was able to get in that year.. currently using the free mcaffee client from comcast....

I use Spybot weekly, adaware weekly, superantispyware weekly, my virus scan is set to update MWF middle of the night and check after the new def file is installed....

I also use trend Micros housecall feature which is one stop shopping, (not the best but it pooints out spyware adware viruses and security loopholes that it finds and is yours for the great price of $0.00 yse absolutely free.....

I would just avoid norton and mcafee....

I've used, and been happy with Kaspersky in the past...although it can be also be a resource (RAM) hog like the other two above....

soo......I always also recommend NOD32...which I demo'd and it was my close 2nd to Kasperskery.....

Kaspersky has better detection, but NOD runs better....pick your poison with those two.

Right now, I use SOPHOS, which is free as a University employee....no problems either, but I'm not sure about it's overall protection. Also checks for spyware on the fly, but would say detection is sub-par.

Did you use google or chacha () to search for this problem?

Here are a few I found....

http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?p=164284#164284

Let me know if those don't help.....the second (with the html ID) looks like an actual fix.

andiesmama - September 13, 2007 09:23 PM (GMT)
I used CHACHA :P and found the same ones.

I referenced that 2nd one (aumha or whatever) in my other thread. It looks like a fix as well but it looks like it might be way over my head......does it look on the up & up to you guys?

I hadn't checked these guys since last night, but that looks like as good a fix as any, le'me do a lil checkin on the imm32.dll an try to figure out how to git a uninfected copy to you. Everthin else I said in your other thread are still good thins to do, I read bout this code injection but didn't want to concern anyone wit the reprocussions of what that could mean. Like I said, some folks had already thrown their hands in the air an formatted.

On topic, Clay is right on, don't go somewhere you wouldn't go in person, an if you happen to, I've found runnin adaware an spybot togeather worked really well.
