We only have two window A/C units. We run the one in the bedroom at night and the one in the computer room during the day.

YEAH, baby! Run the one in the COMPUTER ROOM!!!!!
You ARE a true geek, whether you like it or not! :rolf:
I'm waiting to see how our window units work next summer. This summer it wasn't that bad, but we're cooling a ~2500 sqft house with two window units. The girls' room was rather warm.
Housing association frowns on window units. We put a small one up front behind bushes so it can't be seen from the street and the big one on the back porch.

It's not me that's the geek it's hubby! Though he's right, I had the A/C off a couple months ago trying to save some money and I burned up the server board cos it got too hot  Had to replace the motherboard and a chip cos I fried them
andiesmama - December 14, 2005 05:15 PM (GMT)
Electric: $140/mo (less in winter but alot more in summer, but we're on a plan that averages it out over the whole year, so it stays in the same ballpark)
Phone/DSL: $90/mo
Water: none...we're on a well!
Cable: $60/mo
My cell phone: $60/mo (DH work pays for his thank goodness)
I think that's it....well, not counting our mortgage ($1010/mo) :puke:
GutterRat - December 14, 2005 05:20 PM (GMT)
Reading what you guys pay...you make me sick. I can't even begin to post mine..........gotta go - I'm crying again.

What do you pay? I'm not including things like $4000/month for diesel and $2000/month for truck payment. The utilities are the piddly stuff!
Redguard - December 14, 2005 06:23 PM (GMT)
I live in a condo, so most of my utilities are lumped together:
Water, Electricity, Heating, A/C, Cable - $485/month (it's insane and I really want to move)
Cell Phone - $35/month (wife's plan)
Cell Phone - $30/month (my plan, which I want to get rid of as soon as contract ends)
Residential Phone + Internet (~$55/month)
Honey - December 14, 2005 08:18 PM (GMT)
Phone/Internet around $40/month
Gas heating in winter around $200/month...depends on if we have wood to heat with or not.
Water...nice, overflowing well. :D
Hydro around $100/month
No cell phones no cable.
Have around $50,000 left to pay on mortgage.

Roughly, how much does a home/farm go for in your area?
Have you always lived in a farm, or was it a new transition after you got married?

We only have a 3/4 acre lot with a 1 1/2 storey house. Not sure of the square footage. No farm here. Surrounded by farmland, tho!
I grew up with chickens, dogs and cats. Hubby's the one who grew up on a big farm with all the works. I don't mind doing outdoor work and such...I wouldn't mind having a farm one day...
As for a farm in our area, the cost is anywhere from $150,000 and up. Just do a search to get a better idea. ;) Why? Ya wanna move this way? :eyebrows:

How much land do you consider a farm?

Me, personally, at least a few acres and more. That'd make a nice hobby farm. Yanno, I could get a few goats, chickens, dogs, a couple cows and let them roam free all over the yard like our neighbours do....but then I'd have no yard! Just a big shitpile! :D
Mandy - December 15, 2005 12:23 AM (GMT)
We only pay for internet and phones. Internet is about $30 a month (not exactly $30 because the currency excange rate fluctuates....but it's 30,000 Won), phones are however much we feel like paying in phone cards. The system is a bit different here for phones; you don't have a contract, you just buy a phone and then buy however many minutes (in phone cards) that you want.

I don't think I'd be moving out in your direction... I'm a bit too city bred.
I guess for curiosity's sake, I'm wondering what the opportunity cost (economic terminology) is for living in a metropolis area versus living the "simple life" amongst the Amish.
Plus you mentioned that you only have $50,000 left on your mortgage and I remember in another thread you mentioned your DH's salary and the fact that you all have three kids. The math in my mind left me baffled for a moment.
Honey - December 15, 2005 02:49 AM (GMT)
Ah yeah....we also bought this place VERY cheap. It was a dump and we renovated the whole thing. It ticked the Amish off that we got it. Oh well! First come, first serve. :)
mdolls68 - December 15, 2005 03:53 AM (GMT)
Electricity = $129
Cable Modem & 2 Phone Lines = $105
Alarm Monitoring = $29
Water/Trash = $50
2 Cells with lots of minutes & long distance, no roaming = $145
Long Distance/Toll Free Line = $19
Housekeeping = $50/wk (every week)
Yard Maintenance = $30/visit (every other week)
Stringaling - December 15, 2005 01:38 PM (GMT)
Gas and electric are on averaging so they stay steady for the most part in the amounts.
Gas--$45-$75 per month depending on season
Electricity--$75-85 per month
Cell--first line is free(hubby works for US Cellular) and second is $15 per month plus insurance and taxes brings to about $30
Water/trash--$40
No land line phone
Cable internet(lowest speed)--$30
No cable TV
Add medical bills, insurance, mortgage payment, car payment, car insurance, credit card payment and we are barely scraping by..

HA HA ha aha ha -- ha.
You got that right!
Yeah - in Houston summers without A/C using high-voltage sex toys. The sweat alone would make the beds uninhabitable! :D
