For you homeschooling families out there what cirriculum stuffs do you use?

For math I am using Saxon Math--I love it!

I have just started bob jones science for my oldest. Haven't gotten very far into it but I like it so far.

I used modern curriculum press phonics and it apparently worked because my daughter is reading like a fish now...Don't ask me why I said that it just came out and seems to sound okay to me :D

What do you use?

Beats me...gotta go shopping first.

I think we'll probably get CLE ~ Christian Light Education.

I had it when I went to private school and it's a really good curriculum to work with. Pretty sure my kids could handle it. Plus, it's reasonably priced!

We use A Beka for English and I think I'm gonna get Math-U-See for Kat soon.

Isn't Abeka like super hard?

Or so I keep hearing....:dunno:

I dunno. I hear it's like one grade above public school like A Beka 1st grade is equivlent to 2nd grade work in public school. I don't have any experience with US public schools but Kat is 5 (would start Kindegarten in public school in September if we went by her birth date) and is handling the 1st grade A Beka work ok. I don't think she's super duper smart but she is pretty bright. So I don't know. I think if possible it's good to look over the materials in your hand that way you know what would be a good fit for your children.

I've heard that A Beka is really good, but I've heard bad things about their math program.. We have friends whose mother is a math teacher or used to be or something and she highly recommends the Saxon math..I was glad to hear that since I'd started it already. It is actually leveled a little lower so my kindergartner is on Math 1 and my preschooler is on Math K. I'm sticking with it. IT wroks well because it teaches a concept, builds on it, and repeats that concept throughout the book so the child can really get a grasp on it. I also learned that the grndson of the guy who created the Saxon math program goes to one of the three most elite private schools here in Tulsa and they use Saxon Math--Woo Hoo! Good to know big fancy schools prefer my chosen cirriculum too. :yay:

I've heard of Math U See...What is it like?

I'm excited about meeting another homeschool family in our area. We will meet them soon, well actually we met them, but we will visit with them soon in a social setting. They are the priest and his wife from one of the Orthodox churches in the area..They have 4 kids! :string: We'll be getting to know them and hopefully by next year will have started a co-op for the kids. I'm very excited about that..

Yeah, after looking over the A Beka math I thought it had too much emphasis on drilling rather than on concept. Math-U-See is very visual and is concept orientated.

We're huge fans of Bob Jones math here. Other than that, most is "Home Grown". Not finding anything we could afford that's suitable, we develop most of it on our own.

I couldn't do that...Winging it scares me... :hide:

Honey - July 3, 2007 01:04 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I'd thought of "home growing" one too, but I don't know how well that would work. We still need structure and guidelines (me, too!) and I think CLE is good with that.

I like it when everything is basically scripted out for me.. B)

I like the look of the A Beka book...we have 2...SIL is trying to get me to HS so she keeps giving me books  :dunno: The only one we've used is the craft one

I think GM is being a tad rebellious! :naughty: :P

Hey, I was wondering....since my munchkins are gonna be in grades 2 & 4, should I have them take a diagnostic test? Or just play it by ear and have them work right from the required books when we get them?

I remember taking a diagnostic test, but that was like, grade 9...

Play it by ear. Start working with them. See what they can handle. They may actually be working at a higher level than the stoopid tests say.
