USC didn't actually sign the kid who doesn't even know what high school he's going to go to yet, but they did accept his oral commitment to come to the university once he is eligible.

Story

Should schools be allowed to recruit a kid before his/her junior year in high school?

No.......IMHO, it's crazy.....talk about putting the emphasis on sports rather than "learnin' " !!!

I think it's ok around Jr. Sr. year...

If their gettin' recruit by then...good chance to do something professionally...in which case you NEED NO education.

Ok...slam me.

14 years old is way too young. No way I'd let MY 14 year old do that! The parents must be :screwy:

Is USC offering a scholarship?

Stringaling - June 22, 2007 11:22 AM (GMT)
Pretty sad...Like they've convinced the boy that this is his future, no matter what he decides he wants to do by the time he graduates.."Politics?! Accounting?! An Attourney!?!?!? No! You're gonna play a game for us for as long as we can keep you!...Don't worry, we'll provide you with lots of women and booze.."
:nono: :nono:

I'm not sure why there is a such a misconception that "failing" athletes could be something great like a Dr., Lawyer, etc...

Most are as smart as a bag-o-rocks and ONLY get into college because of their athletic skill. At least if they fail in sports, they have SOME FREE college education to list on the McDonalds application.

If we STOPPED ALL PRO SPORTS right now...the number of Dr's and Lawyers would NOT sky-rocket.

No, it wouldn't, but those guys would push themselves to meet their potential rather than falling back on game playing...They'd be smarter if they had no other choice.. "Step up to the plate" you know?

nah...the majority aren't "step up to the plate" "meet my potential" type of people. More like (as you know) "I want my hummer in high school" types.

Parental guidence is crucial...unfortunatly the parents are part of the problem as well. (ahem...Mrs. (lebron) James)

Then what's the problem? Heck - if I'd been offered a scholarship right outta high school my life might've been different. Being offered one at 14 --- that's just amazing!

Golfingmom - June 22, 2007 08:01 PM (GMT)
I don't see a problem with it. If he is grounded well...it shouldn't be a problem IMHO. A family friend was AWESOME in baseball (playedfor the minor league) but also studied to be a DR. He did both through out college. He played in the minor league for 2 years and will not enter med school to finalize his studies... :dunno:
