Title: Pet Died

So for Christmas, each child received a fish. I know - we splurged. Anywho, my youngests fish died yesterday. I let himh old it and touch it and he threw it in the toilet. I asked him if he had any questions and he said no (he's 2) and that was the end of it...I thought. Today at church, he kept telling EVERYONE about how his fish died. He just walked up to ppl and said MY FISH DIED and he of course received a lot of sympathy. Is there anything else I should do? It's been replaced already (a fellow church goer went after church, bought him a new one and delivered it to our home for him :booyah: ) . This is the first family pet btw. Should we have a funeral? WHAT DO I DO? :dunno:

:dunno: My kids never bothered when our fish died and we flushed them down. Didn't make a big deal over it. They move on fairly quickly.

I would take his lead.....just maybe ask if he has any questions about the whole thing and if not, just let him know that if he thinks of any, he can always ask you or his daddy.
He probably thought it was way COOL to tell people at church....talk about all the ATTENTION he was getting!! :D

IMHO, it's just an animal....if you make it a big production, then it becomes more than that...
But that's just me....
I had some good arguments on the other board about dufuses who thought pets went to heaven.

Yeah. I told him it's off to the ocean for other fish to eat it. It's most likely nothing big. He seemed to "understand" and was ok with it yesterday but kept on talking about it and telling EVERYONE about it today so I got a bit concerned...

I agree with Debby. See how he reacts.
I thought my daughter was going to be upset when her fished died, but she thought it was cool to flush it. She was waiting for the rest of them to die just so she could see them go down the toilet. Guess it's just a good thing she never decided to see what else she could fit down the toilet.

Yep, we've always just been matter-of-fact about death. Animals die, people die....
I just leave the door open for questions, sometimes she wants to discuss it, sometimes it's like "Oh well!" and she runs off to play.....
