Title: "It's mortgage week, Honey"...
Honey - February 1, 2007 07:34 PM (GMT)
Anyone here (besides me) SICK and TIRED of hearing those words? :bored:
Every time I get out a pen and notepad to write up the week's grocery list, hubby comes up and says it over and over with every word I write. I KNOW it's mortgage week every other week, I KNOW we can't spend as much as we do every other week and I am extra careful. Why is it that he feels he has to remind me over and over and over and over and over? He says on the "off" weeks..."Honey, it's mortgage week next week." UGH! :lena:
I have it written CLEARLY on the calendar which weeks are M weeks and so on....WHY does he have to keep ragging like this?
Do you guys annoy YOUR wives like this? :wall:  :smack: :box: :soapbox:
Stringaling - February 1, 2007 07:37 PM (GMT)

Sarah - February 1, 2007 08:24 PM (GMT)
Lena, why do you pay your mortgage more than once a month?
Golfingmom - February 1, 2007 08:30 PM (GMT)
Hubby does the bills WITH me. He's in charge of the money. I was in charge last year and it got to be too frustrating for me. He didn't see where all the money was going  so I handed everything over to him and now we do it together so we're on the same page.
Hate to say it but I'm usually the one reminding him of what's coming up. :swoosh: :bolt:
Sarah - February 1, 2007 08:34 PM (GMT)
I would love if hubby did the bills. He used to but then when he went in the truck I had to start doing them. I hate it.
rasplundjr - February 1, 2007 08:40 PM (GMT)
Every week is mortgage week
Every week is car needs fixed, train pass, groceries, this that the next thing.... oh crap we're negative again week.....

I enjoyed it until he was laid off and his new job paid 2/3 of what he was getting before. We were "making" it before but the last two years have been tough! So...he couldn't understand where all the money was going so I handed it over and now he "see's" what comes in and where it all goes. I've also cut WAY back on spending and have been really frugal with food shopping etc. :boo:

Probably because he's trying to pay it off quicker.
If you pay your bills monthyly, you make 12 payments a month, which accounts for 48 weeks pay. BUT if you pay your bills weekly, you're actually working on a 52 week budget. So you can actually pay stuff off quicker (reducing interest sigificantly) if you pay stuff like your mortgage and credit cards weekly instead of monthly, based on the 52 week budget.
I do our finances. But I always try not to rag or nag about it. My DH is pretty good about his spending though.

Ah. I just try to pay extra when I make the monthly payment.
Redguard - February 2, 2007 01:58 PM (GMT)
I don't have to remind Mrs. Redguard when the mortgage is. But honestly, she seems to have this idea that we just have all the money in the world to spend.
I'm the keeper of the finances, so I'll allocate the savings in the right accounts, and I'll make sure that all our bills (including hers) are paid on time, etc.
But what burns me is when she's sitting on the internet or going through catalogues and just makes notes on EVERYTHING that she wants to buy, as if money is no object.
Burns me up.

I don't have a head for money... never have prolly never will....
My wife due to her epilepsy doesn't have the memory all the time.....
Hopefully If one of these leads pays off witha bigger paycheck I'll have the money.... I'll have to work on a new filing system for mail..... so that I see all the bills and they doen't get misplaced....
seige - February 2, 2007 03:52 PM (GMT)
After my pot and kettle comment I doubt I'll be taken seriously but...
When I "nag" my wife about something it has nothing to do with her. Can we afford for her to go and get her toes done or for her to buy a new pair of pants? Sure. If I bring up money to her or remind her that we have to be saving money it is often because we have just been spending a bunch (notice I said WE) and I am beginning to wonder if we are being good stewards with His money. I'm not judging her, I don't think she's stupid or doesn't realize where our financial standing is but I mention it because it is something I am worried about and I am only trying to share some worries I have with her. This is why I might personally "nag" my wife about finances, because we're trying to buy a $415,000+ 2-bedroom condo in San Jose in the next few weeks and I'm worried...
I think many of your husbands want to take care of you and want to get you everything you desire but at the same time they are thinking long-term. They want to take care of you for life. They love you and, though it sounds like they are failing, they want to encourage you to meet your family financial goals.
Ladies, since it's always easier to change ourselves than our spouse I suggest that instead of getting all worked up and mad at your husband for "thinking so low of you to nag you" that you instead look it as if he is trying to encourage you, take care of you long term and finally just share his thoughts with you (he may be worried about finances like me). It is often a complaint of women that guys don't share themselves with you, maybe we do... we're just not good at it.
String- I'm certain Basil loves and respects you!! I beleive there are some archived threads to prove it too! :)

Almost all of my bills can be done online where they'll send you an email when the statement gets mailed.
How bout if you can't do them online you make a list of all the due dates of your bills along with phone numbers so you can just call the company to find out how much you owe and then mail out the check?

Guy's confession time:
.
.
.
We know that we don't run the household. Even me, as a stay-at-homeschool-dad, I know I don't run the household. My wife does. So, whatever input we can have into running the house, it makes us feel better.
I know that's not what you want to hear, but quite honestly, my wife runs the show here. Last night, I was trying to make chicken soup. How the heck can you screw that up? Well, she and my MIL were telling me, "You have too much water in there." I said, "I put in a lot of rice. I'm going to need a lot of water." (I made about four gallons of soup. :) )
They rode my @$$ so much about it, I wound up taking out almost a gallon of broth. I put it in the freezer so I could use it at a later date. About twenty minutes later, after the rice cooked up, they started saying, "There's not enough liquid in there." I said, "I told you so." and wound up dumping all the broth in - and then added some water.
There was a lot more griping about everything else I did in the soup - then everyone said, "Wow! This tastes good!"
Come on. I've been cooking for about 30 years. My mom and dad taught me to scramble eggs when I was seven. I learned how to cook from "Yankees" (my folks are both from north of the Mason-Dixon line) and I married into a southern family. There are different styles of cooking. I'm not wrong, and dammit, neither are you. They are different!
Anyway, I stormed out of the kitchen saying something about "You cook it your own damn self." My wife told me I needed to get over it. Hey - when you give me advice, I'm free to take it or reject it. If I reject it, then it's me that screwed up, not you. But if I reject your advice, then let it be. I'm not the one that needs to get over it. You either shut up or get out of my kitchen.
Sorry. This turned into a :soapbox:

My husband nags me about things like cooking too. He seems to forget that I know how to cook eggs, etc... I have told him to stop reminding me like I was a child just learning, but he forgets and does it again another time. And as forthe finances, I pay all the bills. Our budget is so tight that there rarely is room for extra, and never pampering things like getitng nails and hair done. He asks me constantly what the balance is because he s woried about us exceeding our limit and enging up in financial distress. It seems like he doesn'trust me to keep it in check. I am at a point that I feel extreme guilt for buying the kids something they need, underwear or socks etc.., because I know that he will complain about me spending too much. After nearly 7 years, I have stress and strange emotional response at even thought of buying clothes and stuff for the kids..I know that he complains becaues of our financial situation, but it makes me feel like crap and athat i am stupid and that he thinks I don't have enough intellegence to know when to stop shopping...Is not like I go out and spen money friviously...I mean, geez..the kids need pants that fit... We decided to shop consgnment this year...may that will make it better....
clayman - February 2, 2007 10:15 PM (GMT)
Freezing broth - Hey, if I need chicken broth later, it's ready. I've got a vacuum sealer. Freeze a big block then vacuum-pack it and I'm ready to go!
Or, I could make it into ice cubes and serve it with tequila.
Honey - February 3, 2007 01:37 AM (GMT)
I hear ya, String. Often I feel guilty for buying myself something and end up not getting it...then he turns around buys himself a dvd (even a set!) for himself, then I end up kicking myself! (If I don't get to him first.)
But yeah....good post.
Stringaling - February 3, 2007 03:07 AM (GMT)
Of course if it is his decision to buy something for the kids then it is okay...He doesn't really shop for himself either..we just can't afford it. When we can get somehting i always feel guilty because I have come to expect the complaints if I buy it without his full knowlegdge and approval..I hate the way he makes me feel when it comes to these things...

I know all the companies around here charge a "convenience" fee for paying online OR withdrawing directly from a bank account.
We pay our bills EVERY thursday. Even if we have no bills, we go through our mail pile and shred, file, etc. That's one way we stay organized and on top of them.

I pay all the credit cards and cell phone bill online for free through bank transfers. I could also pay my house phone, electricity, truck insurance free online using a credit card but I choose to mail checks instead but I could theoretically then just pay the credit cards off with bank transfers so it would still be free online. That only leaves my mortgage and water bill. You could set up a direct debit for your mortgage payment. So you can pretty much get away without having to mail out any checks and even save yourself the postage.

Yeah. Mortgage is the only "free" option available to us. All others charge a convenience fee. The problem with the mortgage is sometimes we have the money by the 1st and other times it's closer to the 15th (due date)...so I'd hate for them to pull out the money and it's not available etc.
I guess I'm old fashion and don't mind mailing in the bills...
Honey - February 4, 2007 01:26 AM (GMT)
Hubby pays all bills in person but the mortgage and insurance comes out of our account automatically.
