Title: Super Sensitive Skin!
Honey - December 6, 2006 01:54 AM (GMT)
I hate this time of year when everybody's skin dries out and becomes SUPER sensitive. Luke is the worst of all of us. I have tried lotion after lotion and he STILL complains and cries that it stings. He's had this since a baby. All the doc ever put him on was hydrocortisone and I don't wanna use that too often. Even with Aveeno and it being a very mild brand, he still says it stings. :bored:
Any other recommendations? I'm thinking of trying Dove, but I dunno...

oh poor baby....I'm ChaCha-ing info for you, here's something I found, I'll post more...this one says it's for a face mask but it might help as just a lotion you could put on then wash off with warm water.

1/2 mashed banana 1/4 cup oatmeal, cooked with milk 1 egg 1/2 tablespoon honey Cook oatmeal with milk according to package directions and cool. Combine ingredients. Massage the mask onto your face in slow, circular motions. Leave on for 15 minutes. Rinse with warm water. |

Thanks, Deb. I just gotta remember to buy bananas tomorrow. Even after using lotion, he runs downstairs to wash it off because it stings so bad. I am so at the end of my rope with this.

18 Dry Skin
Almond and grapeseed oil are the quickest fixes for dry skin. They soak into your skin faster than creamy moisturizers. If your skin is extra dry and rough, opt for thicker oils like castor and avocado. If you're prone to breakouts, try filtered jojoba oil. Spread a thin coat of whichever oil you choose to the dry areas twice a day. |

Dry skin has low levels of oil and insufficient moisture. Dry skin looks dull , is sensitive and is prone to cracks. It also wrinkles faster. Some of the home remedies for treating dry skin are:
1. Mash 1 tablespoon of ripe banana and add to it 1 tablespoon honey. Apply this mask on the face and neck and leave it to dry. Then wash it off with cold water. This mask acts as a moisturizer and helps to make the skin fair.
2. Apply 2 tablespoon raw milk on the face and neck, leave it to dry. Wash off with cold water. This helps to get soft skin. You can alternately use 2 tablespoons raw milk with ½ tablespoon salt, but if you have pimples avoid using this mixture. 3. Aloe vera juice should be applied to the skin externally or taken in capsule form.
4. Diet should include oilseeds like sesame seed, almonds, egg yolk, carrot and beetroot juice to improve the quality of the skin.
5. For dry skin on the lips, apply cream of milk or almond oil daily.
6. Eat raw licorice (mulethi) herb and ensure that you have enough roughage in your diet.
7. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, so that your skin remains hydrated. |

oh poor little guy.... :(
What about just an oatmeal & milk bath? Can't you dump some oatmeal in the tub with some milk & just let him soak in it?
I think oatmeal is supposed to help itchyness, right?

Cool info! I knew I'd been using almond oil for a good reason! Even I find it still stings a tad.
Where do you find "raw milk"? Straight from the cow? :P

Well, it's just his face. He's fine elsewhere. Unless you suggest I just soak his face in a sink full of oatmeal! :smack: Obviously it's from the cold wind/wind burn. I think a good preventive will probably be sunscreen...but for now he's suffering and it's quite red.
I'll see if I can get him to try at LEAST an oatmeal and almond oil mask. Maybe I'll add a drop of lavender. I'll letcha know how it all goes down tomorrow after school.

yannow, if all you're missing from the very first one is the bananas, I bet you could leave them out and it would still help him...

Have you tried dousing him with baby oil after his bath? While the skin is still moist it absorbs lots of the oil and helps me feel a whole lot better when my skin is really dry...
Honey - December 6, 2006 01:33 PM (GMT)
I wouldn't use baby oil because it has a scent to it. But yeah, I'll be giving him a "facial treatment" when he gets home today.
LynnMcG - December 6, 2006 02:53 PM (GMT)
I was going to say oil too. I use Skin So Soft whipped body oil on my kids. I've never liked the feel of body lotion, it makes my skin feel sweaty, like it's clogging my pores. But the whipped oil is awesome because it goes in easy like a lotion (no drippy oil) but moisturizes longer, like an oil.
Also, what soap are you using? My friend was telling me that her pediatrician told her to stop using baby wash on her kids. He said it's more drying than soap. who knew?! My pediatrician always told me to use Dove soap on my kids.

Raw milk - you got plenty of cows around. Why don't you go ask the Amish if they can sell you some?
Now, is this bath supposed to be water and oatmeal and milk or just oatmeal and milk? And, once you're done, how do you get the oatmeal out of the tub? I know you don't let it go down the drain, right Plumber's Wife? Oh - and how do you get that sticky stuff off the kid?
amyroo - December 6, 2006 07:06 PM (GMT)
Phillip's skin is very sensitive, too, and we tried every thing we had. What worked the best was Boudreaux's Butt Paste.
rasplundjr - December 6, 2006 10:51 PM (GMT)
have you tried a plastic bubble or a vat of petroleum jelly?

Plastic bubble?

Well, I had him do a mask of oatmeal, almond oil and honey. I warmed it up, had him lie on the floor staring at the motion lights on the Christmas tree and when I was done slathering him, I set a timer beside him. Once the timer went off, he washed his face with warm water.
NO complaints! :bounce: He didn't complain of stinging even once. So I've gotta do this more often. One thing I recommend...grind the oatmeal first. Otherwise it can be quite sloppy. The finer texture will "stick" better.
Thank you Deb!!! :mistletoe:

I didn't know you meant for his face. I use Aquafor on Sean. It's almost like vaseline, but it's water based. It's the stuff they use on preemies in the hospital. I get it in Walmart. Sean's little face gets super chapped in the winter. So when he's asleep I just smooth it on his little face. When he wakes up, the chapping is all gone. No trauma. No stinging.

Sorry Lena. You didn't specify in your OP, so I wrongly assumed you meant all over. My kids' skin gets really dry in the winter, so I'm always looking for something non-stingy for them too.
Go away Clay. :naughty: Nothing to see here.
