Title: Can you teach a boy??
Stringaling - November 17, 2006 02:49 PM (GMT)
Is it possible to teach a four year old boy not to eat like a pig?!?!? Every time my son sites down to eat he gets up and leaves crumbs, spills, complete spoonfulls dropped on the table, splatters on his shirt, and you can tell what he ate just by looking at his cheeks! What can I do?!?!?!?! :wall: :wall: :wall:

Playing Civ III behind my DW's back.
OK - how do you teach a boy not to eat like a pig? You don't. All the women in my life, from my mother, to various girlfriends, to my wife - they've all tried to teach me that. Unfortunately, the Navy reinforced it with "You have two minutes, and two minutes only, to eat this fine Navy chow!"
Is he the only boy or does he have a brother? Is he the youngest? Sisters can help by being 'Miss Manners' around him. But I think it's a wasted effort.
Yup - after 41 years of trying, I still eat like a pig. I can have a third plate done within ten minutes of starting my first. I've won eating contests...

Even with a smaller stomach I still eat like apig... just smaller amounts....

Geez! thanks guys...
No my boy is not the only one--younger brother is only 17 months old though...

You CAN teach your boy to eat in a civilized manner. Been there, done that and worked swell. Then again all your responses are from BOYS...go figure! My second boy was such a sloppy eater and some days, still is. I simply make him slow down and clean up his own mess.
Good luck!

Oh he doesn't eat fast at all--Oftentimes he will still be sitting at the table well after the rest of us have left. We make him actually eat his dinner --none ofthat "just take three bites" crap. I tell him that's all you're getting and if you don't eat it you won't have anything till breakfast tomorrow...and then breakfast will be what he didn't eat for dinner!
Unless of course its one of those things that he just can't eat and that make him actually vomit at the dinner table( a rare but very real occurance) :puke:

Well, I don't think he HAS to be a slob for the rest of his life. But I do think making him be accountable for the disaster he leaves behind is a good idea. When our nephew lived with us he used to drive me bananas. He's such a slob when he eats! I still tell him no one's going to date him, let alone marry him, if he doesn't knock it off. BUT, I make him clean up after himself.
There's hope String! Is Basil a slob when he eats? I know my husband has great table manners.

Anything goes at home...with immediate family.
When we go out to eat, I turn on the manners.

He doesn't appear to be, but when the table is cleared there are crumbs always left on his side of the table and on elijah's--They don't look like they are being messy--it shows up when everything else is removed

A couple Christmases ago we were having lunch at the in-laws and Luke was eating really fast and just inhaling his food when all of a sudden it ALL came back up! :puke: Funny how we were all warning him to slow down and not to make such a pig of himself....hasn't happened since.
