Title: Web Host/domain Registration
Description: Cost?
GutterRat - December 6, 2005 07:43 PM (GMT)
Anyone know of a decent priced web hosting /domain registration?
I don't know if I really want to get a host for FHL or not. But I do want to register the domain & get us a better web address. :)
I just don't wanna pay a ton of $. :) Any techies know of any good ones?

Hosting -- I can do it. I've got a server up & running, but my connection is rather slow. That wouldn't cost you a dime.
Registration, look around. Sometimes you can find it for as little as $5/yr for a new domain name. But, renewals can run as high as $50...
If someone has a good connection, we can work on getting a server up and running. I'd recommend Linux for the server - it's free and most of what you need is included. I'd be very happy to help with the details from here...

We got a domain from GoDaddy.com. Very reasonably priced.

I found a good registration deal. $15 for 5 years.
Clay - what kinda connection you got?
I'd love to build a Linux box. I've never messed w/ Linux so don't know much about it - but I was told they don't require much to as far as hardware. I have a old computer in my garage - I'll check it out & see what it is. But - do you just go to the web and download Linux?

Just be careful that you're not "renting" a domain and actually buying it. Some companies say you are buying a domain but they actually still own it and you're just "renting" it.

Hmmm, servers. Not a computer techy, but I think FHL is doing pretty good without a server...KWIM?

No, FHL is doing great! It's more of a control thing. I'm a guy - what can I say! :)
The domain part of it - well, I want to be able to tell people to go to www.fhlforums.com to get to our site - not - www.s14.visionfree.com/fhl
see wut I'm sayin'. The server is more for....future. The domain is more for...both.

As Sarah mentioned (and I found out the hard way), make sure you own the domain name. I lost one that way.

Well, I got "RoadRunner Lite" which is 384kbps. I also run my digital phone on it. It's a $ question there. I had offered my server as a mirror for J Vernon McGee's 5 year bible study on MP3 (it's really neat! check it out sometime at ttb.org!), but after it took nearly three days for me to download the entire thing by script they complained that the connection was too slow.
That, and the cable was out for about four hours yesterday which meant four hours of not being connected. :grrrrrr:

Last question first - yes. Download CD images, burn them on CD and install!
Linux is good -- if you know what you're doing. It's very customizable, but it also takes a lot of time to learn. If you'd like to experiment with one that's easy to use, I highly recommend Red Hat's Fedora Core. It's easy to install, and easy to use. If you want to add anything, that's where it starts getting difficult. I've had to whack and re-load just 'cuz I wanted to upgrade MySQL...
I use my Linux box for internet stuff. But I've never been able to play MP3s. And everytime you ask a question on the forum the typical answer is RTFM. So I'm building an XP box for my main computer and logging into an X-session on my Linux box for the internet stuff.
Linux with X (X is windows on Linux) runs quite nicely on a 650MHz machine with 64MB RAM.

You can get ahold of a Linux Bible at your local BArnes and Nobles or Borders for a fairly decent price usually comes witha copy and has darn near everything you need to know...
There are also the Sams *Whatever* in 24 hours courses 24 1 hour lessons and you have a decent understanding....

That's right!
I also forgot to mention that my webserver is running "YESLinux". It's a cop-out, but I was having serious trouble getting around all the built-in security to get my other linux flavors to serve the web.

I can send you a 10GB drive -- I got one in each of those aforementioned dinosaurs...
