Title: Computer Gaming!
Description: WOOHOO!!!

Ah so I gotta ask of course, what’s your poison on the computer? What genera do you prefer and what have you been playing the most this year?
My Genre is mmorpg and mmofps. I like titles such as PlanetSide, City of Heroes, Anarchy Online among maybe the 30 other mmo’s I’ve played over the past decade. This year I’ve spent a lot of time playing PlanetSide, I’ve had that account for maybe 16 months and just dig the BFR’s (big Mech vehicles) -Battle Field Robotics.
Other than mmo’s I like some of the FPS’s but I have nothing new. I like the Quake series and have spent countless hours playing BF1942 over the Internet. Other than MMO’s and FPS’s I occasionally play a MUD.
I’m looking forward to two games mainly. Star Trek Online and Lord of the Rings Online and they are both mmorpg’s.
Lastly, I’m into game art and programming. I like to model and texture low polygon models for games and am taking animation classes next semester (I hope). I have some models out there in commercial mmorpg games and am also working on a game, myself.
This is pretty much an open topic, though I am not a console fan so posting on console games will be over my head :dunno: so lets try to stick to computer games for this thread

I'm wit you on console games, they jes don't take my fancy much.
This year while I'm at the house; I've been playin BF2 mainly, Flat out wit my daughter and an occasional ST Armada 2 wit the wife. In the truck it's mainly jes STA2 but I've got some older titles, star craft etc
Was really rather disappointed wit half life 2 so don't think I've even played a game this year, have gotten aggravated wit all this on-line subscription nonsense though, haven't even looked at any of em, would be interested in that ST online if it wasn't jes sumthin stupid like 75 bucks for the game an then 14 a month etc, I'm jes not home enuff for sumthin like that anyways.
Lookin foward to the BF series... cain't member the name er if its even out yet, a sci-fi one.

Massively Multiplayer On-line Role-Playing Game (mmorpg), Massively Multiplayer On-line First-Person Shooter (mmofps), Multi User Dungeon (MUD). The MUD, which is usually text based, is the father of mmo’s which are graphic based now. It’s all basically the ultimate co-op social gaming that takes place in a virtual world that never resets but continues to grow, think Matrix movie but not as advanced at this point.

Yeah, some game companies charge a lot for their game. Usually the box is under $50 like with any game, and I’ve seen some on sale for $10 and less. Some are free to download but not very many. The reason they charge for the game and not simply give them away for free or little charge downloading over the Internet is simply to gett the games on store shelves to attract new players; stores want to make money too and if you charge $3 for a CD/DVD (some of mine are on 8 CD’s) it‘ll never reach the shelf but get lost on a rack. Only a few charge $75 for the box but these are special collector editions being sold at that price while the regular box version of the game costs much less. Costs for games come in from many different directions, but ultimately it’s the game distributor that sets the price and the actual company that makes the game has little say about it all just like the record companies/distributers set the price.
Then there is the monthly charge, but it’s not always $15 a month, actually that is fairly rare. If you pay month by month than that is often the price but most companies give price breaks if you buy subscriptions in blocks of 90 days, 6 month or 1 year subscriptions. So in the case of like Anarchy Online as I mentioned, it’s $8 a month if you pay for a year in advance which is nearly half the price of the month by month subscription. Also, like in the case of Sony Online Entertainment, they give a big price break when you subscribe to all of their mmo games. There are like 7 games they run and for $21 a month a subscriber can play them all and that comes out to about $3 for each game per month.
For myself, I don’t have a problem with any subscription fee or box charge, simply not going to the movies once pays the subscription to a game for a full month with a little left over to add up for the box price (original box and expansion boxes). As for time, there is no time requirement to play these games. If you play one for two hours in that subscription month you break even with the cost of going to see a movie which does have a time requirement often under two hours or so. No reason to feel the need to play a game 50 hours a month, I have a accounts that have run for years that I play far less per month. The games really aren’t designed to reach some goal in a month or as fast as you can, their much more like a real world environment where the player decides what path to take and even how to redefine such paths. Well maybe not the case with all mmo’s but some of the good rpg mmo’s do a good job of letting a player do their own thing in a game.
Such games are not for everyone of course. Some would rather go and see a movie that really is not their first choice in movies to see. Sometimes I’d rather put gas in my bike and take a long ride rather than put the money into a subscription game I don’t like very much. Some would rather spend a lot of time posting in forums :tease:
I think Star Trek Online will be cool, I’m really looking forward to that one. I just hope it’s made better than how Star Wars Galaxies was, I played that clunker for a year and a half. It’s being made by a different company so there is hope, I just wish they would offer Klingon as a playable race to start, but maybe they will do it much better in an expansion so that may be ok.

I play counterstrike 1.6 occasionally....
Then there are several off-line games I play, but not too often with 3 kids wanting to rough house all the time.

I used to play Everquest II, but I don't have the computer to do it now ( guess who has it... :bored: ). I love Uru, and I'm very happy that they're trying to resurrect Uru Live.

Yeah, I have the commercial counter-strike CD here on my main CD rack, I haven’t installed it on this new computer yet though. Still a fantastic game.

I've played that a little. I like regular solitair, play it a couple times a week on my desktop and now and then on my pocket PC. Since I've been writing down my score (past 6 months) I have a 2736 high score. Hve had better but this is my best recorded score so far.

Sure, I have a mid-level Paladin and Ranger. That game is ok, I don’t care much for how they changed the classes compared to the original EQ but I do like the crafting system in EQ2. I even have some scripts that closely imitate EQ2 harvesting that works pretty well. I do like a good crafting system and EQ2 has some strong points. My EQ2 account is not active right now, but I may get that going when I decide to reactivate my SOE Access subscription again (subscribes to all of their games). I’ve just been playing PlanetSide from SOE lately but I’m thinking of picking up Matrix Online and adding it to my Access account. Also EQ is about to launch a new progressive server and I want to check that out, seems like a good idea. I don’t spend a lot of time playing all of the SOE games so I probably will hardly touch EQ2, always too much to do :tease:
Uru live? Oh that Myst game. Yeah I see they are on mmorpg.com now. Mmorpg.com is a tuff crowd, I know some people that put their independent games up there. I have some of my models in screenshots up there too (with their games). I’ll probably list my game up there soon, lol but I’m not looking forward to that… well not the biased criticism I expect to get for listing a Christian theme game. Uru looks pretty good though, low video requirements (32MB) but high bandwidth requirement (broadband only) may not be good. Looks like a game worth following if it doesn’t turn into vapor ware.
