Title: Sunday - not a good day for computers

clayman - June 19, 2006 11:16 AM (GMT)
Sunday morning, a wicked thunderstorm blew through. In keeping with my teachings about computer safety in thunderstorms, I properly powered down and unplugged all of my computers. Then we went to church.

The Praise Team practiced two new songs. Songs we were planning to sing along with the PowerPoint. That computer didn't come on. I didn't have enough time to troubleshoot it, but I think it may be an issue with the video dongle (image below). Someone's been abusing it, and both the screws that hold it in place are broken.

So, we had no PowerPoint and I was the recipient of a lot of bad-mouthing 'cuz I couldn't get the video working. :violin: I got over it, I know they will.

I came home and plugged the computer equipment in while everyone else took a nap. Everything came up, except my web server. And, that's where my avatar (and most other images I put here) are located. So, no avatar. :bored:

I'm going to re-build it this afternoon, after VBS. I'm also going to bring home the computer from church and see if I can make it work.

.....oh, and sorry about your computer problems....but glad you made it through the storms ok, I saw bits about it on the news last night....

We're in far-west Houston (outside the city limits, actually). The east side of town really got hammered. We still had VBS today at church just west of downtown (a 45-minute drive from home :o ), but not many folks made it. My job was easy - only 18 kids total. :bounce:

There's more rain in the forecast, but I think we'll fare OK. I've got the church computer here and I'm fixin' to open it up.

Thanks for the well-wishes. I'm praying for friends on the east side.

Before the days of wireless and built-in network cards, you had a dongle that connected the network card to the network. You could plug your cable into the dongle that had a proprietary plug on the PCMCIA network card. (You geeks know what I'm talking about. The rest of you, Google PCMCIA! )

Anyway, I saw an advertisement in a computer magazine with a picture of Michelangelo's David (the one with the tool broken off). The caption read, "Lost the Dongle."

I scanned that in and saved it on my work computer. Somehow, that didn't make it home...

Don't let 'em dingle your dongle, either!

Yay! My webserver's back! Apparently, the power supply died. Quick replace (Thank God for ACP power supplies!), and she's back up and running.

Now about the broken dongle on the church's computer. I have to find one. Hmmm. Any interested donors?

Yeah - (took me a minute to figure out AIW=All In Wonder  been a bizzy day!) it's one of them. But, I need it by Sunday. I'm gonna look at Fry's tomorrow and see what I can find. If not, I'll order one overnight from ATI.

LOL - that's good. Yeah, I know. But I had to unload somewhere.

I knew that old power supply in my webserver was dying. Fan wouldn't even come on. I guess it just gave up the ghost. New P/S works quite well!

Glad you're back, A2J!

One more for the road. I set up the church computer where my family computer is. Too hard to get to the plugs for mine. B)

When I unplugged the network cable, I twisted it too much. Took some troubleshooting, but I had to re-crimp the end of it.
