Title: Sooooo Embarassing!
Description: But we couldn't help but laugh...

Redguard - May 10, 2006 05:29 AM (GMT)
Rachel, Mrs. Redguard, and I were in the elevator at our building. We had just gotten back from the ice cream shop.

The elevator stops, and a Muslim lady steps in with a few friends/family. Not just your regular Muslim lady, but one that is completely covered in a niqab, as seen in the picture below.

So Rachel, with her youthful innocence, says out loud, "What's THAT!?!?!"

Her mom realizes what's about to happen and quickly says, "That's daddy's ice cream! "

Objective: Failed

Rachel pipes up again and says, "Is that a GHOST!????"

:wall:

The wife and I both groaned out loud and apologized. The Muslima just laughed it off and said it was okay. So my wife just explained to Rachel that she wasn't a ghost... she was just "covered".

Luckily, our floor came quickly and we zipped out of that elevator as quickly as possible.

That's the thing you gotta love about kids. They're just so open about everything and hold nothing back.

It's also what I love about knowing that Rachel is growing up in a diverse and multicultural area like the city that we live in. She won't grow up sheltered and naive to other peoples, and cultures.

You were probably a lot more embarassed than the other lady. We see that all the time here in Houston. And, they'll happily explain the whole thing. Nichole now shares her knowledge with her little sister - a little louder than we would prefer...

 about the ghost!

That's pretty funny. But it would have been a great opportunity for you guys to have the Muslim lady explain it to Rachel. I'm sure it's not the first itme it happened. Imagine it from a kid's perspective too, from butt level. She looked like a black ghost!

Kids are great. They're too innocent to be concerned with differences, but they're honest enough to ask about them.

Have you guys ever heard of The Power Team? http://www.thepowerteam.com/

They're a group of former athletes/body builders who travel around the world with a message for Christ. I think they've reorganized since we saw them at our church a few years ago, but their primary speaker was this VERY large black man. Now, we live in a rural area that is primarily white. So this was the first time Sarah was seeing a black man up close (she was 4 at the time). I was a little panicked, because I remember the first time my oldest neice saw a black man she asked if he was chocolate (to which the man cracked up). Anyway, she goes up to the man, points to his arm, says somethink like "he's not like Daddy" and he begins to say something to her about the color of his skin thinking that's what she means. And she said, "No! Your arm is MUCH bigger than Daddy's arm." He looked at me and we both cracked up.

Kids....ya gotta love their honesty....especially when Andie tells me I need to shave my legs because they "feel like Daddy's scratchy face"....

Yanno, looking at that pic, I probably would've asked "what's that" too! Kinda freaks me out!

About a year ago we were in a Chinese restaurant and there were some African American people there which is very rare to see in our area. Katheryn noticed and said "Look Mama! That lady is black!" I was explaining to her how it was rude to announce things like that and then she says "And that lady's purple!" It was then that I figured out that Katheryn was actually talking about the color of the clothes these ladies were wearing and not their skin color  I loved how innocent she was that skin color was no big deal to her. We called that Katheryn's "racial profiling" stage where she would profile people according to what color clothes they wore :D

That's so cute!

Sarah still calls people light, light brown, or brown-skinned. Her best friend is of Mexican descent so she calls her light brown-skinned. She just knows that just like people have different colored hair or eyes, that our skin can be lighter or darker too. I love that.

And that's OK - but Momma labels me "Fish-belly white". :P
