Title: Choosing The Sex
andiesmama - March 28, 2006 05:21 PM (GMT)
We were watching Primetime Live (or something like that) the other night & they had a story about how it's becoming more & more common for couples to choose the sex of their child. Evidently, it's done like artificial insemination where the egg & sperm are brought together in a lab, then the DNA of the embryos are checked, then the parents choose which one they want.
Funny....the show didn't address what happened to the embryos that WEREN'T chosen...:dunno:
What do you think?

I think it's pathetic. I wish people would just be happy with what God gives them instead of being so dang selfish with their OWN wants.

Um - at first glance I mis-read NFL as FHL...

That's eerie, but probably soon to come. I mean why not? They already abort children with disabilities or disorders, so the next step will be to eliminate "undesirable" genetic traits, such as overweightness, shortness, etc. and create only "perfect" offspring, who are fit, handsome, tall, etc. Scary possibility, but the temptation to do so, by those who are vain, will be there.

I think it would be really bad if everyone could choose the sex of their children.... it would likely become unbalanced with more of one sex than the other, while in nature it comes out pretty balanced....
the only time it makes sense to me are for families whose genetics would mean a boy would get a disease, but if they had a girl they would not. Isn't hemophillia like that? Also Tay Sacs disease? I can't remember the exact diseases, but with a girl they would be safe

It's far worse then anyone cares to imagine let lone talk bout. It's not that scifi anymore. People are playin God an it can only end in disaster. For example, already its gittin very hard to find base pairs in thins, corn, cotton, grains of all kinds have been gentically engineered an I've even planted this stuff, would do so agin even, but the simple fact is, wit no base pairs left they will end up causin a virual infection that'll wipe out the entire world supply. God thought of everthin when He made everthin, man isn't capable of that, so pushin the envelpoe will cause them to create the disaster. Jes look at the flu bug, it keeps changin each year, an each time they keep comin up wit sumthin to stop it. It will git to the point where they cain't stop it.
Cattle are no different, cross breedin is one thin, re-engineerin em is another, thier goin to cause the end of beef as well. Keep screwin round wit it they'll cause human problems as well. No one wants a disabled child etc, but if it's what God gives em then who are we to say no? I wanted my daughter to be a boy, but God wanted er to be a girl an thats enuff for me.

I'm reminded of a joke er story I heard once, where these scientists went before God an shoved thier fingers in His face an said:
"we don't need you anymore"
God said: "Oh really?"
they said:"yep, look, see we can build thins, we can cure dieses, an WE can even create life!"
God said:"wow, I'm impressed. Could you show me?"
they said:"you betchya"
The scientists bent down an begun scoopin dirt into a pile and God said:
"Hey.. uh, go git your own dirt."
I love that one, go git your own dirt, cause by golley that dirt belongs to God, He created it. It's so true, we can do nuthin witout Christ!

That's kinda how this whole thing started....they do this DNA/chromosome screening stuff for genetic diseases, somebody realized that "HEY!! We can also tell if it's a boy or a girl!"  And that kicked it off....so now, instead of using the screening for potential diseases, they're simply using it to choose the sex... :nono:

Anyone looked at China lately? Selective abortions are wreaking havoc on the balance between the genders.
I'd like to say I don't think that gender selection would be much of a problem in the U.S. because we're enlightened enough that people want girls too but...yeah right.

And that's another thing: Who defines "disabled"? Mainstream America labels Deaf people as disabled---most Deaf would disagree.

Exactly. What's next ? Are brown eyes a disability because someone decided blue eyes are prettier?!
When my son was born we were told he had less than 50% chance of survival. Then we were pretty much guaranteed something else was going to go wrong somewhere down the line because of his prematurity. He was 27 weeks and could have been aborted with a partial birth abortion. (not that this was ever suggested to us nor did we ever consider it an option) Preemie babies often have various levels of "disabilities". This is something we thought about a lot after Sean was born. Imagine how many people think, 'hmm, this might be too hard. There MIGHT be something wrong with this child and I can't handle it.' That's exactly the purpose of a partial birth abortion. Selective birth. It's sick, isn't it?

So, did the knowledge to do all these things come from Satan?
The main question to me is - what do they do with the ones that don't get picked. Trash them? Not good. Save them for another couple - that's a bit better. I would have no problem doing something like this if it would spare my child from having a genetically passed down disease.
It strikes me everytime something like this comes up. Man people are so fast to mark it up in the "sinful" catagory. I agree - picking the gender of the baby is a bit out there - but being able to spare a child from a life of disease would be pretty awesome! Is it playing God? I dunno - I'll have to ask Him.
But as for my origional question - where did the knowledge to be able to do this come from? We can say Satan all we want - maybe it makes us feel really good inside - but I don't think so. God gave us scientists that have great knowledge - and one can say that He even allowed them to make these types of discoveries. Who is to say He didn't allow that for our own good? Just a thought.

I personally don't have a problem with using this method for what it was originally started....to screen for deadly genetic diseases in your children.
I DO have a problem with parents using it to simply pick the sex of their child, the only reason being "We'd rather have a boy (or girl)." Period. :nono:
And I had that question, too....what happens to the embryos that AREN'T chosen??

I agree.... a deadly disease carried on the X chromosome is nothing to mess around with... There are some diseases that are only carried on the X chromosome, thus only show on boys because the second X does not take over... there is only a Y... something like that!
