Title: Childhood Diseases

Honey - March 23, 2006 09:46 PM (GMT)
I got news today that the boy on our bus that has been sick all week, probably has Fifth Disease. He was on the bus Monday, which he may have pretty much been contagious. Today he was sent to school again only to be sent home for the third time this week because he has a rash all over his body. Thus, the conclusion of Fifth Disease.

My kids have never had the chickenpox, measles, mumps or any of those other "common" childhood diseases. I'm just hoping they don't catch this!

Has anyone here had to deal with Fifth Disease? I'll be researching on what to look out for. Isaiah's been pretty crabby this week and I HOPE that he's not coming down with something.

Never heard of it 'til now but here's a link to a site with info.

I know Nichole got something when she was in day care and gave it to me. She had the sniffles for about 3 days. I was in bed with Afever (my wife hates her! :D ) for three weeks. The doc called it cytomegalo virus.

Yeah - I've heard of it. A kid at my daughters old daycare had it - but..thank God our kids never came down with it.

Good luck with that!!

Thanks for the linky, Clay!

Still hoping nobody else gets it....

:haha: Guess what? Luke has the CHICKENPOX! I knew if I'd say it enough (my kids haven't gotten it yet...) it'd come around eventually! This morning as I came out of the bathroom, Luke came running down the stairs, ripped off his shirt and stared in the mirror. "MOM! I HAVE SPOTS ON ME!" So I investigated him and sure enough. He's got them all over. He's already complained about itching. Some have blistered already and there's pus oozing out. So yep...our very first case of chickenpox. Now I've gotta bring him to the doc to confirm it because it's a communicable disease. I've already notified the school. Luke and I were supposed to go to the dentist. That's all cancelled.

So now...him being a typical little boy, I've given him the couch and the remote. Anything to get him to stop thinking about itching!

Now to watch for Isaiah and Candace to get it....

andiesmama - March 24, 2006 01:53 PM (GMT)
oh yikes!! Poor guy.... :(

Did you & Abe have them when you were little? Hopefully....

Just out of curiosity, were any of your kids vaccinated against the Chicken Pox? Or is it too new of a vaccine? :dunno:

rasplundjr - March 24, 2006 01:55 PM (GMT)
Well getting all over in one fell swoop would make sure you don't have to worry about it.... but hopefully it's one at a time... I can't imagine having three down with it at once... that would have to be a a major bummer...

But here's praying the other two don't catch it... ANd that Luke gets over it in a hurry...

Honey - March 24, 2006 02:01 PM (GMT)
Yeah, Abe and I have both had them as kids. No, our kids haven't been vaccinated against it. It is a very new vaccine and is available in the doc's office, but I'd rather they just get it out of their system naturally. Tho, I have noticed a couple odd very small red dots this past week. I thought they were just zits....:dunno:

Luke's being a real trooper. Not complaining too much. He's just bored.

Honey - April 8, 2006 02:26 PM (GMT)
****UPDATE****

Candace has the pox now. It's been exactly 2 weeks since Luke had them. Abe has brought her to the WiC to confirm. Poor girl wanted to go to a friend's birthday party today. When she sat down at the table for breakfast, I noticed a couple "odd spots" on her face and neck. Yep, she's got the pox! Her back is bad. So far, no itching.....yet. So no school for her until Wednesday. She didn't like that, either. BUT, I told her she'd be ALL better by Friday, which is HER birthday! She perked right up at that! :bounce:

So yeah, next we wait for Isaiah.....

andiesmama - April 8, 2006 02:34 PM (GMT)
ah geez....well, hopefully you'll get them all done at once!! How do you think Isaiah will handle it?

Honey - April 8, 2006 02:50 PM (GMT)
IF he gets it, he'll probably be frustrated that he can't go on the bus or to school. Can't say for sure otherwise...

I think we'll probably set up the trampoline today so it'll be a good, fresh distraction for the kids and they can spend more time outdoors than in.

Doh! David had the chicken pox vaccine, and my mother's group has the chicken pox in a few of the kids. I am meaning to get him around them in case the vaccine didn't take he can find out earlier rather than later

Speaking of childhood diseases.... there has now been a case of mumps in my county. Did you hear about the mumps epidemic here in the midwest? :(

ceres - April 11, 2006 11:11 PM (GMT)
I take it that's a no! Well, there is one.... a major mumps outbreak.

:bike:

Why would you want to expose him to the chickenpox "just in case"? You already vaccinated him, I doubt he'll get them anytime soon. If anything the vaccination MIGHT just delay it and there's some cases where chickenpox are worse when they get older than when they battle it when they're small and their immune systems are stronger. But....that's just my opinion, nothing totally factual. My oldest son is 10 years old and he's still not had the pox and he's never been vaccinated against them. He's just got one darn strong immune system. B)

Oh and Candace is doing well. Her spots are scabbed over and she's no longer contagious. Now for the spots all to heal, in case you're wondering.

Also, no, I did not hear of mumps in your area. Just hope it doesn't last too long.

 Sorry....I didn't reply because I hadn't heard of an outbreak! But isn't there a vaccine for mumps? So how can there be an outbreak?

 Oh yeah....in kids who aren't vaccinated, right??

Actually that's part of the debate... its showing up in ADULTS instead of kids.... and these adults were vaccinated... AS kids....

And Lena, actually, i didn't approve of David getting the chicken pox vaccine, my husband did that! So I just make the best of it. Why would I want to expose him? Because sometimes the vaccine doesn't "take" meaning it doesn't develop any immunities in the child... and if this is the case I would rather him get it younger and not when he is older.... but that too is in my opinion

Redguard - April 12, 2006 04:31 AM (GMT)
Funny. My first time hearing about Fifth Disease was reading this thread.

Now there's a confirmed case of it at Rachel's daycare.

Honey - April 12, 2006 01:57 PM (GMT)
First time I heard about Fifth Disease was when Isaiah started kindergarten.

Actually, not too long ago we had a case of whooping cough in the city. It affected even those who were already vaccinated, children and adults. Even my sil and her oldest son have both had whooping cough AFTER they'd been vaccinated! Both ended up in the hospital for treatments... How weird is that?

The doc's told me I'm in need of a "booster"....eh, whatever. I ain't gettin' no shot on MY butt!

:haha: No a MUMPs shot.... lol.... usually as a child its given as MMR measels mumps and rubella.... lol.... a measels shot for mumps :gotcha:

I don't know what we're supposed to do... hopefully the doctors figure it out. Good news is, mumps is transferred by body fluids only so I think we're safe as long as we're all good. That's why its a problem on campuses, ya know? Too much exchange of body fluids. :dunno:

I've pleaded the fifth. I've had a fifth of gin. I've even been through the fifth inning. But Fifth Disease must be a Canadian thing...

Here's what webmd has to say about Fifth's Disease:

QUOTE
Fifth's Disease

Fifth's disease is a highly contagious condition caused by human parvovirus. The condition results in a facial rash that looks like the cheeks have been slapped.

Fifth's disease usually affects school-aged children.

What Causes Fifth's Disease?

The virus is transmitted by sneezing or coughing. The disease is only infective before the rash appears.

What Are the Symptoms of Fifth's Disease?

Symptoms of Fifth's disease include:

Flu- and cold-like symptoms such as coughing, running nose, fever, generalized aches and pains in joints and muscles, loss of appetite and irritability.
A cheek rash that looks as if the face has been slapped; the rash is not painful but is warm to the touch.
Spreading of the rash to the thighs and arms.

How Is Fifth's Disease Diagnosed?

In most cases, a doctor can diagnose fifth's disease by seeing the typical rash during a physical examination. To confirm the diagnosis, a blood test may be done to look for antibodies to parvovirus.

How Is Fifth's Disease Treated?

There is no treatment for the disease itself, but medications like Tylenol or Advil can treat the symptoms. Those who have Fifth's disease should drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration.

clayman - April 12, 2006 04:32 PM (GMT)
OK - why Fifth's? Why not Forth's or Sixth's? I mean, we could have a "Go Forth's Disease" ya know, like Go Forth and Conquer this disease...

 Y'all think I'm serious? :tease:  :rolf: :haha:

Yeah, I was having a little fun. When Lena mentioned it a couple weeks (or was it months?) back, I looked it up. I think Fifth was the discoverer's name (or at least favorite Beethoven symphony)...
