Title: Wireless Connectivity Issues

mdolls68 - March 4, 2006 07:59 PM (GMT)
I know there are a some computer gurus here, so here is an issue I'm having:

I have a Linksys WRT54Gv5 wireless router (it also has 4 ethernet ports) and a Netgear wireless adapter WG511v2

I went onto the Linksys site with this IP and checked my Basic Wireless Settings:

- Mixed (both B and G)
- There are 11 channels, the default was Channel 6. I've tried all the various channels
- My Wireless SSID Broadcast is Enabled

I've disabled my wireless security. It was disabled before, but then it somehow set itself to WPA Personal and then it set me to WPA-PSK security and so I put the WPA Shared Key in, but that tells me the renewal rate is at 3600 sec. Does that mean even 6 min. I have to put in a new code? So, that's why I Disabled it.

- My Wireless MAC filter is disabled.....

I can't seem to get connected and stay connected.

I have 3 other computers that have ethernet links and their connections are fine, so I know it's my wireless. My card is fairly new -- less than 3 weeks old.

I'm beside myself as I need to be able to access my laptop to do my work.

This all started yesterday morning when I was trying to download a file from the internet and it kept disconnecting me. Rebooting seemed to be okay, but I couldn't stay connected for more than an hr.

Today, I can't be connected for more than 15 min. It's very frustrating.

Does anyone have any suggestions or insights as to what is going on?

We have not changed the location of the router & modem, and there are no additional electronics we have brought into the house that could interfere with the signal. I just don't understand. Oh, yesterday I downloaded remote access software from my work, so I thought that could be it, so I uninstalled it, but it's now even worse than when it was before....

HELP PLEASE!!!

There goes my workout for today because I need this back up and running.

Thanks,
Doris

Ok....my husband ran an ethernet line out to my laptop, so not sure if I'm on that or on wireless, though my wireless lights are on. I reset my security to WPA2 and put in the code they had for me into my Netgear. I'm afraid now to take the ethernet out because I'll go nuts if I have to reboot again. I'm really so beside myself right now and have been VERY unproductive.

I feel extremely discouraged right now. I was supposed to have worked for 5 hrs today on work, but have uninstalled that software. I've gotten NOTHING done today and it's 1 pm.

I'm sorry, I hadn't noticed this thread sooner, how are thins now? 2 er so days later :( If your still havin trouble, I could use a bit more understandin of your networks topology, jes, is your other puters connected via hardline er are all of em set to wireless also? I have heard of a very iosolated occurence of Linksys wireless routers when hard wired an used wireless of problems wit a buffer overflow, but in each of those instances, the entire network suffered, no er poor connectivity. Last I had heard they were workin on it, but I doubt your havim that trouble if none of the other puters are havin trouble. When your lappy disconnects, does the light on your router go out as well? Indicatin a card disconnected from the network? Have you tried pingin your router er leavin it run durin your disconnects? Ie. open a command prompt an type ping -t 192.168.1.1 <enter> (press control c to break) that address assumes you haven't changed your default gateway on your router as well.

What I'm curious bout is where the disconnection is at, wether your card, your router droppin you, a wireless/broadcast issue, er if sumthin on your puter is dumpin the connection, an btw, what OS are you usin?

Has the wireless ever worked properly?

Have there been any changes to the system since the last time the wireless worked normally?

Do you have the latest firmware updates for your router?

Do you have the latest drivers for your card?

Any new sytems get added where there might be an IP conflict - Normally you get a warning about IP conflick but every so often they can become silent too....
