Richard Shrake is THE BEST when it comes to training a horse!!! i highly recommend him and his videos/books! my family has been training and showing for many many years so it's "in the blood"---but we use his methods always.
We (when i say 'we' i mean my WHOLE family...aunts, uncles, mom, dad, me, siblings, grandparents, and counsins---all on my dads side) have one farm that my uncle and aunt stay on and everyone keeps their horses there. there is 200 acres of land there, plus they live next to the clinton lake and we can ride all around that area. it's really beautiful. there are nine horses all together right now, plus four mini's. (miniature horses) also have four goats for the small kids to show in 4-H if they want to. none of mine are doing that this year...will probably start next year if we still live in this area. also have rabbits and pigs. the family all "shares" the farm and we take turns w/ the responsibilities. although, i have to admit that i do the least amount of work right now just because i am so busy w/ school and four small kids!
my horse's name is Beauty and she is 11 yrs. old now. she is an Appaloosa and is great w/ kids. we have 2 hired helpers who do daily chores w/ her that my parents help pay for. during the summer we have 4-H students help w/ her for free---they love to come ride her. we try to hit a rodeo here and there when we can w/ the kids...i love going....but my hubby is from indianapolis and he's not really in to the horse stuff. so we don't get to go too often anymore. :(

i would have to say, after being around the mini's, they are infact their own breed! they are quite testy and less able to ride children the way our family had planned for them. we had originally bought them as an income opportunity....hoping to use them for birthday parties ("pony rides"), carnivals, parades, etc. we quickly found out that they are more stubborn than the mules we used to have! they bucked my neice off numerous times and now they just run around "wild" in the pasture. they aren't good for much of anything really, in my opinion. but they are neat to look at and admire. they are quick to bite, quick to kick, and quick to run away!!! let's just say that i am NOT their biggest fan, that's for sure!! :boo:
