Title: Water: Myth Vs Truth
andiesmama - February 23, 2006 02:50 PM (GMT)
So what's the deal with drinking water? (It's something I struggle with...) On a good day, I "might" drink 16-32 oz, if that! I know I need to be drinking more, but what's recommended? Is there an amount you'd get to that would be overkill, that is to say, no reason to drink more than 64 oz (for example) because it doesn't do any more for you....or the more you drink the better?
Cold water burns more calories? True or false?
Also, WHY?? I mean, I know it "flushes out your system" but if I drink alot of water I just feel bloated, and seems to me that all the water I drink, I just pee it out anyways, so it's like a "wash" (no pun intended)....back to the starting point, you know?
I will say, though, that for some reason I notice an easier time with losing weight when I stick with drinking ALOT of water throughout the day, consistently....
Thoughts from you more "experienced" peoples out there.... B)

The only answer I have for you is that cold water burns more calories because your body has to use calories to heat it up. that's what I saw on Oprah a few years ago....
andiesmama - February 23, 2006 06:37 PM (GMT)
me too, String....anyone else?
Honey - February 23, 2006 06:51 PM (GMT)
I too, always feel even more bloated after drinking water...makes no sense to me. :dunno: I don't think it burns more calories, though.

I don't know about the cold water thing.... but I will add that water is good for your skin!! Actually just getting enough fluids that are non caffeinated helps your skin. I can't remember exactly why though.

Alrigty - here we go.
Water is a MUST if you want to lose weight.
It doesn't have the sugar that other drinks have.
Keeping the body hydrated keeps you healthy. Yes, it is good for the skin, but also good for the internal organs as well. Plus, if you are working out and sweating - you need to replace those fluids.
It does help "flush" the system. You body is mostly water so it needs to get replenished. I've been told that a lot of times a feeling of hunger is really the body saying - I'm thirsty.
Water can also help you in not eating as much (see above).
As for how much? Well, you've heard the 8 glasses of water - that's just to stay healthy if you are NOT working out. If you are - up it. I'd say almost 10.
when I was heavy into working out - I would drink over a gallon of water a day! I'd have a gallon jug of water and it went EVERYWHERE with me. It took awhile for me to be able to drink it - but I felt so good!
As for the bloat - I've found that when I first started drinking a lot of water - I felt bloated. But when I exercised and ate proper foods - the bloat was gone. I would actually feel bloated when drinking pop or gatorade.
As for the cold - it's right. Cold water burns calories - although not enough to make a big difference - because the body has to warm it up to pass through.
I'm out!

water?? you drink it??? i wondered what it was for.

(saaaay... that's not that lake of fire I hear so much about, is it?)

Huh? Do you mean "Keeping the body HYdrated?" B)

Ok - here it is. I've been stepping on the scales before and after peeing. I've lost an average of 1.7 lbs every time I pee. Is that what you mean water weight?
I haven't checked it for :poop: incidents, though.

Dude! That's like 24 ounces! Are you sure about that? I hears somewhere that the bladder can only hold 14-16 ounces!
This is gross......
clayman - February 27, 2006 08:02 PM (GMT)
Back in my 'ard drinkin' days, I used to drink two or three beers with my leg shakin' just to keep from peein' myself. It's a good possibility that I stretched mine a bit...
And, I've done this three times. All three times it was 1.7 lbs. In fact, I weighed myself this morning - 251.4. Then, after my last trip to the can, I was at 246.6. That's almost five pounds, just from drinking water and coffee, eating a bagel and lounging around the house! :booyah:

Sorry I'm jumping into this late.
Here's how to know if you're drinking enough water throughout the day -- when you go pee, your urine should be fairly clear. You could drink lots of water the morning and your pee be clear, but if you don't later in the day, your pee won't be. That's how I gauge.
Your body changes with its water needs, so you need to adjust.
I typically only drink water 99% of the time. Now I drink it at room temperature. I used to drink cold water all the time, but the Yin & Yang of my body gets thrown off. I physically feel better when drinking water at room temp, though I prefer ice water, which I drink sometimes.
It is important for your body functions for you to keep well hydrated, and it also helps with one's skin. My skin is fairly good, and I think it's due to all the water I drink (filtered), as well as a healthy diet, rest, exercise, etc.
You get used to drinking water, and I don't get bloated feelings, except when I've eaten things that make me feel gassy.

wouldn't gatorade or any other hydrating drink be just as good as water?

Gatorade is packed w/ sugars. It's good for quick re-hydration and that is why it is used during atheltic events. Water is still the best.

Bump on Gutter's last post.
Water is the best. One thing though, if you do not like water, replace what you currently drink in part with water -- like diluting it. Then, replace one cup at a time with water instead of whatever you are drinking. Do this gradually.
At the same time, keep telling yourself that you LOVE the taste of water, that it refreshes your body, it keeps your body hydrating and functioning properly, etc. Keep doing this whether you really believe it or not. Eventually you'll prefer drinking water to anything else. It takes time.
I used to be a huge soda & ice tea drinker. No longer. Can't really stand the stuff.
~MG - March 2, 2006 08:01 PM (GMT)
I can't imagine my life without sweet tea! And coffee. I can give up sodas.
What about Corona's or any other type of alcohol? I love love love love mud slides. I know that I have to either hurry up and drink the rest, or pour it down the sink because it is LOADED with sugars/calories. But as far as beer is concerned, is lite beer really "lite"?
:offtopic: but curious just the same.
andiesmama - March 2, 2006 08:19 PM (GMT)
I think with beer, it's more the carbs than anything, right? :dunno: I'm not too much a beer drinker....white zin or Capt & pepsi....:drunk:
Oh yeah, and I CANNOT live without my coffee, either....
mdolls68 - March 2, 2006 10:13 PM (GMT)
I don't drink alcohol, but I would guess it's high in carbs -- lots of sugar. So, if you're trying to keep stable insulin levels, probably drinking alcohol will not help.
~MG - March 3, 2006 12:06 AM (GMT)
You guys just keep raining on my pretty parade ok?
I can axe the beer, it doesnt taste that great anyway....well unless you put lime in it. But I am going to try to consume more water.
Gosh, Doris, how do you watch so many body functions at the same time??

Good on the drinking water. I know you can do it. Just make slow gradual changes.
What do you mean by keep track of how many body functions?

Drinking lots of water also helps keep your liver and kidneys working properly which will speed up the removal of toxins from your blood....
Alcohol is also a diuretic... it'll dehydrate you... hangovers... major dehydration...
Responsible alcohol use everything should be okay....
The old addage... everything in moderation....
I'm not supposed to drink alcohol when I take my diabetic meds because it can cause a multiplier effect and I'll go into insulin shock, and possibly die.....
Not a pretty way to go.....
