Title: Our Own Little Corner....

GutterRat - February 15, 2006 10:36 PM (GMT)
I was doing my typical "blog scanning" - reading other blogs - and I came across this one entry that made me go, "hmmmmmm". - Que song....

Anyhoo - here is the quesiton...

"How often are you around people or read books that don't agree with your way of thinking?"

And here is what the blogger wrote about this question.......

QUOTE
I wasn't sure to answer but if he asked me now I'd be able to give and answer. My answer would be "more than I used to be but not as many as I'd like to be?"

I mean how many "christians" have read books on/about Charles Darwin, evolution or non-creationist theories on the existence of life? How many liberals sit down to the 700 club with an open mind? Fact is we don't do that. Maybe it's too hard, too much strain on our phyche, too hard to be willing to flex and adjust.

But what it's done is segmented our society and culture into these sects that don't agree and only listen to people that quote their same mantra. We don't this to the point that we can't even find common ground. What's more is that we do this out of what I believe is good intentions. We want to know truth and to believe in what is right and believing in what is right means everyone else is wrong.

Actually I've been thinking about this for awhile. A few weeks ago I found myself saying, "You know, my world wouldn't be wrecked if evolution was a good theory, but scientifically it just doesn't convince me."
Then I realized---
It doesn't convince me because of Michael Behe's theory of irreducible complexity.
I've never read a rebuttal to Behe's theory.
I've never even read Behe's book, just a paper written off the concept.

Anyway...
I think it is important to read stuff that we don't agree with or that challenges us. It's uncomfortable and can be confusing, but a person can only be stronger for it. The important thing is to realize that you can suspend judgement...if you are reading something persuasive that you are not comfortable with, you don't have to agree or disagree right away. You can study all the points of view, consider them carefully, and then make your decision.

If our faith cannot stand up to the real world, it is not a faith worth having. I believe irrevocably in God Almighty, Who created this world and is bigger than all the problems in it. If my understanding of Him does not stand up to this world's problems, then it deserves to be destroyed so something of worth can be built.

I do. :)

I read books about all kinds of things.

At the moment I am taking an Eastern Religions class in college.
