Title: Best Way To....

1) Get rid of my "love handles" (trim my waistline)
2) Get rid of my saddlebags

:puke:

Thanks!!

This should be interesting...I wanna hear this, too.

LynnMcG - February 13, 2006 09:32 PM (GMT)
Lunges, lunges, lunges. You can't downplay the importance of stupid, painful, yucky lunges when it comes to trimming those thighs.

I have had great success with Pilates and the balance ball when it comes to my mid section.

Then we also have to remember that our bodies have changed since we had our babies. So we're probably not going to look the way we did when we were 18. I know my oldest SIL had what she described as saddlebags, but what really happened was that her hips were just a bit wider after having had children. Can't do a darn thing about that!

andiesmama - February 13, 2006 09:56 PM (GMT)
oh noooo....it's not my hips, it's simply F-A-T!! :puke: Because I can squeeze it back/down and it's GONE!! lol

Debby,

It basically takes reducing your bodyfat and most of that comes through what you eat. You cannot dictate where your body takes off fat either. It will come off in however way it wants to come off. So, basically 80% is from diet, the other 20% from the appropriate workouts. For most people, it is more cardio and some resistance/strength training. It's best to lose at a slower weight to allow the skin to not have that baggy look. The older someone is, the more slowly they should lose weight due to the less elastic it is (IMHO).

It is possible to exercise A LOT and still have those. You have to find the right combination of what will work for you. For an overexerciser and sporadic eater like me, I need to make sure to eat every 3 hrs small meals, otherwise, when I do eat, it's way too much at one sitting. I use a heartrate monitor to gauge how hard I need to be working. Often times it doesn't feel like it's hard enough, but my heartrate will show this is so.

I'm steadily losing bodyfat. Most of my fat is coming off my thighs, hips and the area under the breasts. It's even more slowly coming off in other areas. I'll let you know in another month how that's going.

Does this make sense? There are no exercises that "spot" reduces. If you build more muscle in an area that has a lot of fat, you're just pushing out that fat and your measurements will end up getting bigger. You can gain muscle without losing fat, too. There is a fine art to this and you have to figure out what combination works best for you.

Hope that helps,
Doris

Cardio !

andiesmama - February 14, 2006 01:51 PM (GMT)
cardio = :puke:

j/k....kinda....ok, I'll emphasize cardio in my workouts (it gives me an option)...I WAS emphasizing lowerbody & core, with only a day or 2 on cardio....

You should be doing cardio almost every day!

I do at least 30 minutes of cardio right now. The toning stuff is extra. All the toning in the world isn't going to do enough to reduce the fat over those toned muscles.

mdolls68 - February 14, 2006 02:41 PM (GMT)
Walking is excellent cardio. Take Andie for a walk.

There are many things you can do for cardio -- just make sure to keep your heartrate up for 20-30 min. (or more) continuously.

For those who may think sex is cardio, it isn't.

Awww. You just ruined my workouts!

So, that 15 seconds of extended heartrate doesn't count for anything?
:haha:

I know that I need to get cardio worked into my daily business, my problem is that I have a very small house and with three kids I can't really go for walks easily. they walk slow and on the double stroller they are too heavy and the one walking is slow.. The size of my house limits the space I can move around actively in. What can I do? Any suggestions??

Have the one walking get on the stroller, too. You can use them as resistance training. Our house is small and I never do cardio in my home. Everything is either outdoors or at the gym.

You can also see if someone can trade babysitting with you. You watch their kids while you exercise and vice versa.

Stringaling - February 14, 2006 04:53 PM (GMT)
I've tried that--they are too heavy that way-about 100 pounds for the three of them. Its too hard for me.. Makes my back hurt and my arms and legs...I don't have a car--my husband takes our only one to work with him, an i don't know anyone else who has children...Kinda stuck I am...I am afraid that I may have to wait until the kids are older and less dependant on me...

andiesmama - February 14, 2006 05:34 PM (GMT)
String...do you have a dvd player? Because I use the Walk Away the Pounds series and it REALLY works!! (I think Lynn uses it, too)

Stringaling - February 14, 2006 05:57 PM (GMT)
I do have a DVD player--but I just don't know if I have enough room to move around in. It is in our bedroom--had to convert living room to bedroom when baby #3 came along--so no longer have a living room with space to do things like that in..{More than anything I want to move out of this house} Plus its a real pain to do exercise tapes when one kids hits the other or starts screaming --its always something with the kids. I could do it at 5:30 in the morning when my husband leaves for work, but geez--who can function at that time of day? I guess I could give it a try at the butt crack of dawn or before..Its the limited spce I worry about...How much space do those workouts require?

andiesmama - February 14, 2006 06:11 PM (GMT)
Not much room at all, really! In our old house, I used to do it in our bedroom sometimes, that video is for the most part walking/marching in place with some knee lifts & kicks.

The one I have is the 1-mile, 2-mile, or 3-mile, and it's in 15 minute increments (the 1 mile is 15 min, the 2 mile is 30, and the 3 is 45).

I hear you about not doing it first thing in the morning....I always do my workouts when Andie's taking her nap or having her "quiet time" after lunch....I am SOOOO not a morning person!! lol

Stringaling - February 14, 2006 06:14 PM (GMT)
I've tried to squeeze workout in while the kids were quiet..it doesn't work. someone has to start crying, get hurt, or just get under my feet. With three kids under the age of five personal "me" time is a thing of fantasies..

Honestly, the only time I can seem to get my workout in, is at 5:30 - 6 a.m. when my DH leaves for work. I have my coffee, read my devotional and bible then exercise. I pray while I'm exercising too. Then I have my exercise done for the day. I've spent a little quality time for me, with God, and I feel a lot better.

Try it a couple of days and see what you think.

Oh, and yes, I do use the Walk Away the Pounds DVD. I have Walk/Kick which is her version of kick boxing. I love it. I also have a really small house. I push the coffee table back, pick up the toys, and get to work.

Stringaling - February 15, 2006 01:39 AM (GMT)
how much floor space does it take? I only have about 5 feet between the bed and the television, so space is a major concern... I have considered trying in the morning at 5:30. I guess I am just being whiney butt. I hate getting up at 4AM!!!!

andiesmama - February 15, 2006 02:07 AM (GMT)
5 feet should be plenty of room, I don't know about Lynn's kicking one, but mine you can pretty much walk in place through the whole thing....you don't have to move around unless you've got the room....

Clay???

You only go 15 seconds? Poor wifey.

No wonder you don't consider that a workout...

Could you put two in the stroller and one on a small bike? You can get them at garage sales in the spring time.... we got two little bikes last year and one was a dollar...
