I know there are a couple besides me on here that read him....I belong to his book club & did you know he's got a new one out?
It's called Cell, and it sounds reeealllyyy good.....here's an exerpt (sp?) from the flyleaf:
| QUOTE |
| The cause of the devastation is a phenomenon that will come to be knon as The Pulse, and the delivery method is a cell phone. Everyone's cell phone. Clay and the few desperate survivors who join him suddenly find themselves in the ptich-black night of civilization's darkest age, surrounded by chaos, carnage, and a human horde that has been reduced to its basest nature...and then begins to evolve. There's really no escaping this nightmare.... |

I just read the cover of that at the PX! I really want to read it, but it'll have to wait until I get caught up with life. I hope they don't run out of copies.
I loved the biography they put in that one...it was something like "Stephen King lives in Maine with his wife, novelist Tabitha King. He does not own a cell phone."
Edit: Oh good, don't have to worry about the PX running out. Fictionwise has it:

Not a real SKing fan...
I read Cujo in Jr. High....
I'd like to read The Shinning which supposedly is better than the movie...
I've also heard GREAT things about The Dark Tower (I think thats the title)....
What can you tell me about The Dark Tower??? Isn't there like 8 books in that series?
Mandy - February 4, 2006 06:36 AM (GMT)
There are seven books, and it is probably the best series I have ever read. EVER. It is genius.
Just a warning, there are parts of other books in the Dark Tower series. I understood what was going on with the references from "Salem's Lot" because he explained it very well, but the parts from "Hearts In Atlantis" might be a little confusing.

oooooooohhhhhhhh The Shining........that book is AWESOME!! MUCH better than the movie, that's for sure....
I never got into the Dark Tower series...maybe I need to try it again....
So far Cell has been great, you've GOTTA get it, Mandy!! Classic Stephen King....
Beware of cell phones!!

Incentive for me to get homework and housework done...hey, if I get going on work tonight instead of spending hours on forums, I could get it tomorrow :)
But dang it, I have books ahead of it in line...and I have strict rules about my book line. Must get reading!
P.S. Deb, does my sig sound familiar? If not, you didn't get far enough in the Dark Tower series :D

Oh, I gotta ask! It's not about the new book, though. Have you read a short story by him called "Riding The Bullet"? I wanted to compare opinions :D

Oh gosh....a loooong time ago, I can't hardly remember it....werewolves? Something like that, right? Refresh my memory a little bit....

The main character is at college and his neighbor calls to tell him that his mother has had a stroke. His car is broken down, so he hitchhikes back home, and ends up catching a ride with someone who is dead (not a ghost, physically dead, yucky).
Anyway, my thoughts were concerning a couple of the minor details, so don't worry about it :)

So what are the titles of book 1 and 2...see if I can find them used....
Why reference other books..that's odd...
Should those be read first? Didn't he write Dark Tower first?

You'll be fine not reading the other books first. I mean, he references lots of other literature also. For example, Book 3 is called The Waste Lands, after T.S. Eliot's poem The Wasteland.
I don't know why he references his other books; he said something about this series being the main point of his career, the project that all the other books led up to, so perhaps it was natural to resolve many of his previous stories here.
He just finished the Dark Tower series last year.
Book 1: The Gunslinger
Book 2: The Drawing of the Three

Only thing I'll watch by Stephen King is Dead Zone.
LynnMcG - February 4, 2006 11:36 PM (GMT)
I read "Riding the Bullet" as an ebook about 4 or 5 years ago I guess. It was my first and only ebook. From what I can remember, I liked it. I've always admired how he can pack so much creepiness and symbolism into a short story. He's a master.

Man Bites Dog!
:haha:
Just started Cell last night...

I really love how good he is with adolescent characters. A lot of authors write them off, or use stereotypes, or just plain don't make them believable. It's doubly amazing that he's good with both male and female adolescent characters.
Yay :)

OK SK fans - Stay away from Riding the Bullet the movie. As always, not done nearly as well as the book.
When will these film makers get it? You can't create a sucessful headtrip on film! It doesn't work.

Ugh, they tried to make a movie out of it?! Yuck!
