Title: It Really Works~

andiesmama - January 27, 2006 02:21 PM (GMT)
I am SOOOOO sensitive to those stupid onion fumes....you know, the tears start flowing whenever I have to cut them up

I had heard somewhere (or read it) that lighting a candle by where you're cutting them up takes away the fumes....so I tried it seeing as nothing else has worked...

And NO TEARS!! :booyah: I've done it like the past 4 or 5 times I've had to cut them up and it's worked every time....

Just had to share, little things like that make me happy!! :tease:

LOL! Yep, that works. So does washing them with cold water first. :)

Oh and Deb...it's ok to be a little emotional while cutting up those cute lil buggers.....:cheeky: :swoosh:

Or just put them in the frige an hour or so before you cut them... I tried the candle thing and it didn't work for me. i'll stick to the refrigerator thing...

andiesmama - January 27, 2006 03:42 PM (GMT)
see...I KEEP mine in the frig....so that's never worked for me....I've heard of the cold water thing but I always forget...

Cool! Good to know! I keep mine in the fridge too - sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Maybe some onions re just stronger than others...I also heard to put a slice of onion or your head while you cut, but that just seems silly...

I just let the tears flow!

J/K. I always forget about it until tears are pouring down my face. Since I'm usually next to my stove, I'll just light a burner. That works too.

LOL! I did that once. Let the tears flow. Since the kids are always in the kitchen when I'm in there, they noticed the tears and started laughing at me. I told them I was crying because they laugh at me! I ALMOST had them convinced, too!

:haha:

The cold water thing never worked for me. The best thing I discovered for it was contact lenses. When I had them in I always offered to cut other people's onions for them 'cos they never made me cry.

Since I had the laser surgery done on my eyes I cry again, a very serious side effect of the surgery :boo:

I'm gonna give that candle thing a shot though or maybe the burner idea. Thanks for the hint.

Wow I will try this. I usually just try to cut while standing reaaaaaaaallly far away from the onion.
